The Crawfords moved from Black Mountain to j quarters on the post at Moore gen- ; oral (SwMtinanoa Div. VA Hospital) this past summer. Mrs. Crawford is an active mem- 1 tier of the creative writing division ! of the Blark Mountain Arts Club j and also of the Black Mountain Woman’s Club. In the summer of 1949 she won second place in the annual national contest of The Midwestern Writ- ; er's Conference in Chicago, in the contest for the best book of child- | ren’s verse. The judges committee, headed by Adcle M. Kies, well known juvenile editor and author, advised that Mrs. Crawford try getting her poems published in various juvenile publications be fore submitting them for book publication, which is to an author’s advantage. Since then her poems have appeared in CHILD LIFE, WEE WISDOM, THE LITTLE FOLKS, and prior to the contest several had been published in BE GINNER-TEACHER, publications of the Baptist Sunday School Board; also in DEWDROPS, a publication of the David C. Cook Company for little folks, Elgin, Illinois. Mrs. Crawford had been , writing adult poetry for years | but began her career of juvenile i writing with the arrival of young j Tinka. The book collection was entitled VERSE FOR TINKA, and although Tinka is now a col lege freshmen, her mother still feels that the verses belong to her, because she was the inspiration originally. Mrs. Cawford was recently made a member of the Asheville Branch of the National League of Amer ican Pen Women under the spon sorship of Mrs. Thomas S. Sharp and Mrs. Frank Howard Richard son of Black Mountain. Reprinted by permission of both Editor and author.
