High School HIGHLIGHTS By Mary Lou Giard Square Dance On March 14. there will be a square dance at the club house at 7:30, sponsored by the Beta Club. The prices of admission will be 25 and 50 cents. If you want an evening of fun, be sure to at tend. „ , Bake Sale There will also be a Bake Sale the following day, March 15, at the Black Mountain Hardware store, also sponsored by the Beta Club. Please support the Beta Club in its attempt to raise money for the trip to Raleigh on March 20-22. Introducing— For the next three weeks there will be several practice teachers from Montreat college, at the high school. They are: Miss Mae Hager-, home economics; Miss Louise Cay ton, geography and history; and Miss Jeanette Nash, biology. We all hope you will enjoy your stay with us. Family Life Conference Thirteen students from Black Mountain High will leave tomor row morning at 9:00 to spend the day in Asheville for the Annual Family Life Conference. Those who will act as leaders are: Yvonne Nanney, David Mundy, Eva Smith and Jack Farr. The recorders are Mary Lou Giard, Rita Gasperson and'Steve Kaplan. The topic is Your Personality—Key to Success ful Living. Wo would fill like to thank Mr. Shuford for allowing us to be absent from our classes in order to attend this conference. The absence of many students due to colds and other various ailments has led to a delay in pub lishing the High Top on time. Now that everyone, or nearly everyone, is back and in good health, there is a great deal of work to be done. It will be greatly appreciated if all club and class reporters will see that their news is handed m at once. , , .. . . We are all proud of the fact that our boys were runners-up in the Buncombe County Basketball tournament. It would never do for me to overlook an error made in this column a few weeks ago. Arnold Jones and Arthur Davis are go ing to attend an F.F.A. (not an F.H.A.) convention. Sorry, boys. No hard feelings, I hope. The Junior class is working very diligently on their plans for the Junior - Senior banquet, and it looks as if it will by all means be very successful. John McNeil, noted Scotch preacher, will hold services at 7:30 p.m. Fri day, March 14, at the church. Dr. McNeil will also play his original piano composition entitled “From Egypt to Canaan.’’ The public is cordially invited to attend. The church bus will run for those who need transportation. Mrs. Marshall Brown gave a suprise stork shower honoring Mrs. C. L. Bailey in her home on upper Craig circle. Many lovely and useful gifts were presented the guest of honor. Carter and sons of Church road spent last week end in Baxley, Ga., visiting Mr. Carter’s mother. Troy Robinson of Craig circle made a three-day trip to Balti more, Md. Mrs. Willie Houchens of Grain circle is spending a few days in Washington, D. C. Mrs. Cleta Graham of Black Mountain highway had as her dinner guests this past Sunday: Mrs. Rodman Sawyer and sons, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Bryant and daughter, Carolyn, Ann Carson, Mack Carson and son, Ronnie, and Mrs. Graham’s nieces, Betty and Margaret Sawyer. Mrs. Graham will motor to Carlisle. S. C., to spend the Easter holidays with friends. Mrs. Lois Maloney of Black Mountain highway spent this past week end in Drexel, N. C., visit ing her sister. Bill Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Thompson of Craig circle, has re-enlisted in the air force with his former rank of corporal. Bill is stationed at the Greenville air base but left by plane Tuesday, March 11, for 30 day maneuvers at Camp Hood, Texas. His wife, the former Miss Lou Ellison, and daughter, Yvonne, will leave for Greenville March 17 where Miss Thompson will re sume her former position. Asa Meeks, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Marrett of Arco road, is also stationed at Greenville air base. Miss Patricia Padgett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Padgett, has enlisted in the W.A.C.’s. Hermits - Trouble in North Carolina is that several of the local associations—-Belmont, Mar ion, Forest City, Morehesd City, Cherrwille, Monroe, Kings Moun tain. Rutherfordton and Waynes ville, for instance—do not belong to the state group. In other words, these organizations reap legisla tive benefits and protection brought about by the state as sociation's activity m the legisla ture and in Congress and before the various North Carolina boards and commissions without contrib uting one dime as organizations to the state merchants’ organiza tion. Thev live to themselves. Whether this is due to negligence on the part of the N. C. Merch ants Association or to lack of co operative spirit on the part of the merchants in these communities, we are in no position to say. Never theless, the situation exists.
