Blaze Causes $4000 Damage To Geneva Hall What could have developed in to an extremely disastrous fire at Montreat was averted Satur day morning: by quick work of the Montreat fire department. Estimated damage, chiefly from water, was set at $4000. The alarm was sounded when Miss Eleanor Ammons, a college student, saw smoke pouring from the attic of Geneva hall, an un occupied wooden building at the rear of Howerton hall. The Montreat fire department rushed to the scene, cut holes in the roof, and brought the fire under control within a very short time. The Black Mountain fire de partment was called but found the blaze under control. —Bungalow houses originated in India. F. J. H. English, 72, who died Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in an Asheville hospital following a short illness. Survivors include Mrs. Sidney Croy of Swannanoa. The Rev. M. M. Workman and the Rev. T. A. Groce officiated and burial was in the church cem etery. Native of English in Madison county, Mrs. English had resided on Grassy Branch road in the Swannanoa community for the past 23 years. She was a member of the Bethel Methodist church. The following grandsons were pallbearers: Raeford Gibbs, Wayne Block, Grady Block, Bill Riddle, Bruce Jones and Walter Croy. Members of Circle No. 1 of the Woman’s Society of Christian Ser vice were flower bearers. Surviving, in addition to the husband and Mrs. Croy, are 5 daughters, Mrs. Ora E. Black and Mrs. Ed Wilbanks of Candler, Mrs. Harvey Metcalf and Mrs. Rudolph Gibbs of Asheville, Miss Grace English of the home; two sons, Earl of Loyall, Ky., and Harold of Gladewater, Texas. Also surviving are five sisters, Miss Rosa Jarvis of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Julia Wood of Travelers Rest, S. C., Mrs. Grove Peterson of Unicoi, Tenn., Mrs. Nora Rus sell of Lowell and Mrs. James McGhee of English; two brothers, A. E. and C. M. Jarvis of Dray ton, S. C.; 17 grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Harrison Funeral Home was in charcp. 400 Women Attend District Meeting The annual meeting of the fourth district, N. C. Federation of Home Demonstration Clubs, was held Wednesday in the sales pavilion of Biltmore Dairy Farms. Among those attending from the Black Mountain club were Mrs. Charles Clevenger, Mrs. Garland Stepp, Mrs. William Hinkle, Mrs. Herman Holdway, Mrs. Ledbetter, Mrs. Morris Gardner, Mrs. W. D. Hyatt, Mrs. Marshall Mott, Miss Lyde Wilson, Mrs. Finley Stepp, Mrs. L. C. Jumper, Mrs. Paul Phillips, Mrs. Howard Harris, Mrs. W. T. Miller, Miss Mary Mac Kay, Misses Waters, Mrs. Jonas Stepp, Mrs. C. D. Jones and Miss Helen Miles. Approximately 400 women from Buncombe and surrounding coun ties attended. Swan - Oteen Woman’s Club Elects Oficers At the May meeting of the Swan-Oteen Woman’s Club held in the nurses club, the following officers for 1952-53 were elected: president, Mrs. James E. Darby; vice president and program chair man, Mrs. James A. Crawford; secretary, Mrs. L. J. Ring; and treasurer, Mrs. Grover C. Godwin.
