Finally in desperation he pick ed up a paper and made a roll. While we watched he stuck it up to his mouth and pretended to be eating, turning the paper in his hands to show that it was round. "It was something like this," he said, "I believe you called it something like maize on a stick." That was the clue. Of course if we hadn't been so dense we'd have known long before that he meant corn on the cob. More About— Postmaster From Page 1 was carried by a Mr. Pitman, and it took him a good part of the day to get in to Swannanoa with the mail for the afternoon trains which ran about 2 o'clock. ‘The office hours were pract ically from sunup to sundown, and folks came all day long for mail, etc. “One of the most interesting pa trons of this office was a man by name of W. Jobe Cleveland, who came here and lived in a one room cabin just west of Swan nanoa. He had a great deal of reg istered mail, mostly addressed to places in Cleveland. Ohio. To reg ister this mail made me very ner vous, as I was scared of the gov ernment. This man had a little window in his cabin, and no one was allowed to enter therein. His mail and his outside necessary things were carried on by a colored slave, Uncle Joe Davidson, who died a few years ago at 105. “Uncle Joe brought Mr. Cleve land’s mail and 1 gave him reg istered receipts, always with fear and trembling. Mr Cleveland was so queer that I did not know what might happen if 1 made a mistake. "Ivjantthe maytag automatic!* washes, rinses, spln-drtas your clothes. He had a long black beard and was an intelligent looking person, but his mail to me was a night mare. “Swannanoa has grown since this time. 1 can remember when it had only one street. 'The post office was a meeting place for folks to wait for ihcir mail and get news. The office was in a country store with a big stove in the middle of the building. In winter time folks could sit round, chew tobacco and get the news." More About— Elementary From Page 1 PTA officers and committee chairmen are: president, F. P.
