When she returned on Friday she was ac companied by her brother and 'Vlfc. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Orr of Charlotte who spent the week end here. •Mrs. Frank Estes has had as guests. Miss Elizabeth Bowman and Mrs. Walter Berry of Orange burg for a few days this week. Also Mrs. Daisie Dryer of Colum bia, S. C., spent a week with Mrs. Estes. I’hylis Estes has returned to Erskin college, Due West, S. C., where she is in the sophomore class. Dr. and Mrs. Henry W. DuBose are spending a week in their cot tage on Alabama terrace. Their son Henry W. DuBose, Jr., is witli them. They are on their way to the wedding of their son, Wil liam Thompson DuBose. They will return Oct. 1 to Wilmington as Dr. DuBose is supplying the pul pit of the Presbyterian church. Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Pack of Philadelphia are in their cottage on Mississippi road. Their son Wallace who lives in Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Pack’s aunt are on a visit here. Mrs. L. M. Hull of Orlando, Fla., is spending a few weeks in her cottage on Virginia road. Her grandson and family, Dr. and Mrs. Dexter Witherington are with her for a short stay. Dr. Witherington is a lung specialist of Oteen hos pital. Mrs. L. A. McCall of Florence, S. C., is in he rcottage on Grey beard trail for a few weeks. Dr. Frank Estes is in New York City attending a committee meet ing of the National Council of Churches. Mr. and Mrs. George Estes of York, S. C., are spending a few days with Mrs. Frank Estes in her cottage on Assembly drive. Woodward at the meeting of Circle 1 of the Presbyterian church Tuesday, Sept. 7, in the fellowship room of the church. Mrs. W. H. Barkley presented * hri-tian Education”, taken from the church news. Mrs. Margaret James and Miss Mary Hooker served as hostesses. A social hour was enjoyed after the meeting and refreshments served to Mrs. G. F. Bell. Mrs. Cur rie Betts, Mrs. S. M. Bittinger, Mrs. Fred Treat, Miss Susan Hooker, Mrs. Barkley, Miss Ruby Jolliffe, Miss Sarah Kirby, Mrs. G. L. Kirkpatrick, Mrs. A. E. Knoefel, Sr., Miss Katherine Mourning, Mrs. L. B. Poole, Mrs. Clifford Porter, Mrs. Ann Sharp Harrison and Mrs. Don Wright, who was a visitor. Miss Mary Hooker is circle chairman. Binford, interim pastor of the Kerlee Baptist church, will use as his subjects Sunday. Sept. IS): morning wor ship, “Christ’s Explanation of Himself.’ Evening worship: “What Is Cod Going to Do?” mer teacher in Montreat college, was awarded a Ford Foundation Fellowship. She is now a teacher in the High School in Newman, Ga. They have given her a year’s leave of absence in order that she may take this nine months of study and travel. She is now spending a few days with Miss Lucy Grier in the Grier cottage on Virginia road. She leaves this week for Canada where she will observe the schools and take private lessons in French. She will study a few weeks in the University of Vermont, Middle bury, Vt. and then spend a short time in New Yory City and in Rochester, N. Y. She will spend Christmas at home. On Jan. 15 she sails for France on the Queen Elizabeth. She will spend a few months in study in Paris. She will visit some other European coun tries before returning home in June. Mr. Walter Shepard is in Mont gomery, Ala., for a short time. Mrs. Shepard is spending a few weeks in the Assembly Inn. They have been in one of the Liddell apartments all summer. Mrs. Clark Johnson has returned to Richmond, Va., where she is teaching music. She spent much of the summer in Montreat. Mrs. Shaw McEachern has re turned to Anderson college, Ander son, S. C., where she is teaching music. The Rev. and Mrs. L. I here was a large attendance at. the home coming at Stone Mountain last Sunday. There was good choir singing and special singing with the Gospel Quartet from Pine Knob, the four tone quartet from Morganton and other special singers. Our pastor, the Rev. Frank Hollifield, delivered the message Sunday morning. Flowers for the cemetery were the scarcest we ve had for many years. There was an abundance of food for everyone. There was singing' and a testimonial meeting in the after noon. Clifford Nanney of the U. S. Army is spending his furlough with his wife Marie and his mother, Mrs. Carrah Lee Nanney, and children Bert, Griva, and Stuart on Bald Mountain. At the termina tion of his furlough his wife will accompany him back to his station at the Smoky Hill Air Base in Salina, Kansas. Mrs. Girtha Ownbey of this community spent a few days last week with her sister-in-law Miss Frances Ownbey, in Black Moun tain. Mrs. Lola Nanney and her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Davis, and small son and John Nanney, son of the late Walis Nanney of Ashe ville, spent the week end at their old home in this community. We ^ had the following visitors last Sunday afternoon. My hus band’s brothers and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Lum Elliott and children of Buffats, S. C., RolanjU Elliott, Hoover Hall and Wayne Elliott of this section, and my great nephew and his wife, Rev. and Mrs. Fred Vess of Swannanoa. There will be a home coming at Clear Branch P. H. Church on Broad River next Sunday Sept. 1!). Everyone is invited. The revival meeting will start at Stone Mountain next Sunday night. The visiting ministers will be the Rev. Mr. Chatman of Shingle Hollow. Everyone is invited to come and be with us in our re vival. Mont Murphy, who was badly injured some time ago and has been a patient in Bat Cave hos pital, is improving. He was taken to his home on Lower Cedar Creek last Sunday afternoon. Walker Elliott, who has been in very poor health for some years, is back in Marion hospital. Luther Ledbetter is sick at his home on Broad River. The decoration will be at the little cemetery on the Mark Elliott place the fourth Sunday, Sept. 2fi, in the afternoon. TRY THE CLASSIFIEDS! ! ! ! Kilbys Sunday, were their son Memford and family of Bull Creek. Visiting the Loyn Howies of Long Branch Rd. Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Arval Lunsford, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bryant and child ren. Mrs. Bulah Howie and little son Ronnie visited Mrs. Dorothy Mor gan Thursday at her home on Long Branch, Rd. Visiting the C. M. Howies Sat urday, Sept. 4, were Floyd Shep herd and son Mitchell of Mars Hill. Monroe Howie, his father C. M. and Carl Thomas visited Troy Gragg of Shope Creek Sunday afternoon. C. M. Howies little Dog Tommie killed a large copperhead under the apple tree not far from the house Tuesday morning. He escaped getting bit this time. While getting dinner Saturday, Mrs. C. M. Howie heard a chicken making a peculiar noise. She looked out the window and there to her amazement went a large black rattle snake crawling around the bank in front of the kitchen door. Grabing old Betsy, the shot gun, she ran to kill it and lo and behold it hadn't been fired since last fall and it had rusted. It snapped 3 times but didn’t fire so Mr. rattler lives. He made his get—away be fore she could get help. The Baptist Church has the church under pinned and their cement step finished. Joseph Mongovis of Longs Branch had an accident last week. He got one of his shoulders dis located. The man who runs the bulldozer on Longs Branch killed a large copperhead and also a rattler while working up there last week. Joseph Mongovis also killed a large rattler in his backyard. The Bob Smiths of Longs Branch spent Saturday and Sunday at Andrews this past week end. Mr. and Mrs. Billie Binehuff of Ohio have been visiting Mrs. Bine huff’s parents, the T. C. Stevens of Bee Tree Rd. Miss Bettie Creasman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Creas man of Summer Haven is attending school in Washington. Mrs. W. G. Harrison of Bee Tree Rd. has been quite sick with a cold for the past week. Visiting the Joseph Mongovis family Sun day were Mr. and Mrs. James M. Burleson and children of Asheville. Mrs. Monroe Howie, her great Aunt Zettie Williams, and her 2 sons, Troy anti Brisco Williams, also Miss Mary June Mcurry all of whom are in the W. N. C. Sanatorium visited her Sunday night. Miss Wilma Brank, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Brank of near Warren Wilson College, was sick the past week and was un able to attend church services Sun day.
