Iation of state officers and a skit which compared the growth of a teen-ager to that of a rose. , As far as we here at Owen are concerned, the most important part of the program was the awarding of the State Future Home-makers of America degree which is the highest honor that can be held in the club. No one from this valley has ever received this award; however, this year, out of the 15 from this county, four were from Owen High school. They were Anne Woodcock, Dianne Nes bitt, Betty Patton, and Nancy DuPuy. By recording, these girls were also on WLOS Saturday morning, Mar. 21), where they told what they did to get this award. Nancy DuPuy s picture was on dis play at the Carolina Power & Light Co. in Asheville. From all of us to all of you—Congratula tions ! On Tuesday, April 1, a county 4-H talent show was held at Er win High school. Owen was rep resented by 11 girls who present ed a pantomime on “The Birth of the Blues.” They were Carol Stafford, Carolyn Bryant, Martha Ferguson, Margaret Mashburn, Mary Martin, Patsy Lee, Jackie Huscussion, Linda Allen, l’attie Byrd Talbot, Annette Hall and Elaine Stafford. Since they placed in the blue ribbon group, this en ables them to participate in the district contest at Erwin on April 26. Last Wednesday was observed as French day by the French club. At this time all the members of the club had to speak French to each other for the whole day. Each one was fined 5 cents every time he spoke English and 50 cents for not speaking it at all. Every one had loads of fun, and from now on each Wednesday will be ob served as French day. The fines will be used to give another par ty like the one they recently had. The two intra - mural games this past week were played by the sophomore teams and the freshmen teams. The winner of the sophomore group was the team made up of boys from Mr. Straeh la’s, Mr. Taylor’s, and Mi's. Lein ster’s home-rooms, with Steve Luckadoo coaching. The team that came out on top in the fresh men group was that from Mr. Kyker’s, Mr. Ditt’s, Miss White’s, and Mr. McAllister’s home-rooms, Robert Sparks coaching. Next week will probably be the semi finals. The dance that was to have been held by the Student council a number of weeks ago was given last Thursday night in the school lunchroom; the title, “The Bunny Hop.” Besides the usual square dancing', round dancing, and hop those who came were royally en tertained with a floor show' which was scattered throughout the eve ning. The first was a pantomime, done to the music of “Lollypop,” bv Kaye Robinson, Melba Riddle, Carolyn Epley, Joe Robinson, Bill Morgan and James Moyers. Later, this was followed by a very cute pantomime to the music of “Tam my” by Melba Riddle, who was , assisted by the Student councli • sponsor, Y. L. Medlin. The next i act was the pantomime' mentioned • above that a number of the 4-H > girls worked up. The last bit of the entertainment before the , grand finale was a piano duet by Peggy Cooley anil Jane Bowness. , Following the refreshments the finale wms presented in the form of Mr. Medlin singing “My Wild Irish Rose” (impromptu). Keevie . Ballard and Dianne Nesbitt were - in charge of refreshments; Joan Connet and Mary Bannerman, dec . orations; and Nana Owenby, ad i vertising. !
