Reddy Says: As days get shorter, lights burn longer. Reddy knows that long, cold nights and sunless days can work him over time because everyone has just one idea—keep warm and comfortable. And he likes to help you do exactly that. But he also has a gentle reminder. Cold snaps call for more kilowatts than do summer months. The auto matic furnace runs practically all the time. Your electric water heater must heat water that comes into the home at a much lower temperature. More hot meals and in - between snacks are prepared on your electric range and small appliances. In fact you use more of just about everything electrical such as TV, lighting and electric space heaters. Naturally, the more Reddy works for you the more his services are re flected in your electric bill. However — when the weather’s roughest is when folks appreciate the comfort and convenience of electrical living. Take a peek around your home and then ask what else does so many things at such reasonable cost? It's still the biggest bargain in the family budget. Gardner This may bo a pood time to pass ailing answers to a backlog; of questions which have been submitted: Q: I have several big crepe myrtle plants proving in full sun in my yard. They bloom sparsely and I am tempted to cut them bark waist high. Would this he advisable? A: The crepe myrtle re sponds to frequent pruning because new growth is pro duced which usually results in profuse flowering. While this plant will withstand heavy heading track, 1 would nd\ ise against this practice du ■ to its dwarfing effect. If it seems desirable to reduce the size of the plant, I would pre fer pruning over a period of two or three years, rather than heading back severely at one time. Q: What plants can 1 use to prevent soil washing down a slope A: Common periwinkle, pashysandra. 1*1 n g 1 I s ll ivy, creeping juniper. sod;::n, myr tle, lily-turf (Liriope). or dwarf lily-turf (ophiopogon). It is understood, of course, that these plants mus: become established before soil erosion is stopped. Mulching with pine needles or grain straw will help. tj: When should 1 harvest my gladioluus conns? A: It is desirable to lift the corms each year. This should be done about f >ur to six weeks after blooming or just before the first killing frost. Place the cornis in a well-ventilated place and ^let them drv thoroughly. A.ter drying, clean by removing the old, dried, mother conns and (Id ro >ts that may be at tached to them. After clean ing. dust with five per cent D1 it for protection against thrips. Store the conns in shallow trays, or other con venient containers, not more than about four inches deep. Store at a temperature of 50 degrees, or as near this as po-sible. Keep from freezing. Q: Which is the hardiest of the ivies? A: Bailie ivy (Hedera helix baltiea). It is similar to En glish ivy but the leaves are smaller. interest In Science Is Burning WNC The Science department of Appalachian State Teachers college has figuratively lit all Bunson burners to fire up stu dent interest in science in Western North Carolina. I)r. I-’. Ray Derrick, head of the biology department, an nounced that two grants have been applied for from the Na tional Science Foundation to further scientific study in Western North Carolina. One application is to support a course for high school science teachers and the other is for courses for high school stu dents Both are for the 1960 summer school session. If your car is stolen i n North Carolina chances are good it will be recovered th.rough the Motor Vehicles Department’s Theft Bureau. Sleuths discover and restore to owners about 98 per cent of the vehicles stolen. MEREDITH COLLEGE WILL BUILD NEW DORM ON CAMPUS Tin' Meredith college presi dent, Dr. . Carlyle Campbell, announced this week that plans for a new dormitory to be built on the campus were approved by the executive committee of the board of trustees at its November meeting. Because of the fact that the pressure for college admission is -o great in the State, said Robert G. Deyton, Meredith vice-president, the officials will proceed immediately with plans for the 200-student dor mitory on the east campus. Meredith college, supported by the State Baptist Conven tion, is one of five four-year colleges for women in North Carolina.
