Temperance . . . . . . Tid-Ilits Alcohol and Accidents Alcohol continues to be a startling factor in accidents. According to the National Safety Council the cost of ac cidents 1 traffic, occupational, and home accidents) to the people of the United States in 1955 was $10,300,000,000. The estimated cost of all traffic accidents in 1955, ac cording to the Council, was $4,500,000,000. Some progress has been made in appraising traffic accidents in which al cohol is a factor. Fatal traf fic accidents in the United States in which liquor was in volved are estimated all the way from 20 per cent to 60 per cent. The National Safe ty Council says that a mini mum of 23 out of 100 fatal traffic accidents involved li quor. Traffic accidents in the United States cost 36,301 deaths in 1934 and 38,300 deaths in 1955, with the an nual average for the 22 years running close to 33,899. Fatal traffic accidents in the past 22 years, therefore, totaled 745,792 and the number of these accidents involving al cohol, according to the most conservative authorities, rang es from 20 per cent, 149,158, to 40 per cent, 298,317. An increasing proportion of both home and occupational accidents involves the use of alcoholic beverages; therefore a larger part of the total loss should fairly be credited to it. In a study of alcohol and mental disease published in Allied Youth November, 1942, page 5, Dr. Horatio M. Pollock, former director of the New York State Department of Mental Hygiene, estimated that the annual loss of pro ductive human capacity due to drunkenness, alcoholism, and alcoholic mental disease in the United States is more than $5,,000,000,000 a year.
