Mrs. Louis Ronquil lo, leader, entertained the chil drens ward at the W estern North Carolina Sanatorium with a puppet show. Follow ing the program patients were presented with the puppets and Christmas stockings by members of the troop. Mrs. J. W. Bergthold and Mrs. Constance Webber have gone to Sarasota. Fla., for an indefinite stay. Mrs. Mack Milton and daugh ters. Donna and Denise, of Memphis, Tenn.. spent the hol idays here with members of her family, the Frank Karnes Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Slat kin and children, Paula and Donnie, spent several days during the holidays at Day tona Beach. Fla. Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Bownes and family, Jane and Alex, spent the holidays touring Florida. They attended the Orange Bowl football game while they were in Miami. Dr. and Mrs. S. M. Chicago. Miss Rosalie Guthrie of the Mountain Orphanage spent the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Cambron and daughter, Margueriete. A 3C Arthur M. Slagle has returned to Rome. N. Mrs. Earlie Stepp Greenlee. Mrs. Greenlee visited rela tives here the summer of '58 and had been in declining health -dnce. Henry Stafford arrived Sun day from Atlanta after attend ing the funeral of his young est brother Emmanuel, who died Wednesday of a heart at tack. Word was received here last week of the death of Mr. Gene Rutherford of Ohio. He was a former resident of Black Mountain and a brother of Mrs. Minnie Kate Pixon and the late Horace C. and Logan Rutherford. Mrs. Callie Carson left last week to visit relatives in De troit. Dave Jones is sorta on the ailing list this week suffering from a blood clot i: the left knee. Rev. W. L. Johnson, a for mer pastor of the Mills Chapel church and minister for over 50 years, died in an Asheville hospital last Thursday night. Rev. Johnson as many of you . :> recall, was noted for good spiritual advice and his work in communities at the various places he pastored. Folks from all areas went t>> Rev. John son for advice on church and other activities. On Sunday afternoon as I sat in the beautiful service held for Rev. Johnson, one of the ministers impressed me greatly with these words: "In going through life an individual must acquire cer tain factors to be called won derful. ile stated that Rev. Johnson in every way quali fied himself as a wonderful man of God. working continu ously toward the up-building of God’s Kingdam.’’ Celebrating birthdays over the week-end were Tom Daugherty and Donnie Stepp. The Knights of Daniel will meet at Mills Chapel church Thursday night at 7 o'clock. Archie Pertiller is director. Mrs. Maggie McClellan, 89. of the Swannanoa area, died Saturday night after a lengthy illness. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Gar dner of Swannanoa, and Mrs. Texie Evans of Haw Creek, one son Frank of Swannanoa. one sister Mrs. Josephine Un derwood of Swannanoa, and one brother Winslow Lytle of Black Mountain. Funeral ser vices will be held Wednesday at 2 o’clock at the New Salem Baptist church in Swannanoa. Bankers Honored The Treasury today paid tribute to the bankers of Am erica for their 20 years of vol unteer service to the United States Savings Bonds Pro gram. Since May 1941, the nation’s banks have been the principal issuing agents for more than two billion Series E Savings Bonds bought by millions of citizens, many of whom saved their first money through bonds. Jn the salute to the hanking profession, the Treas ury statement said: “America’s hanks have sold nearly two billion separate Savings Bonds since 1941, at no cost to the Government or the purchasers.
