The results of the survey showed "Happy Days” ir, first place, “Starsky and Hutch” in second, “Baretta” in third, “Welcome Back Hotter” in fourth, and fifth place went to our own Miss White's favorite, "Moving On!” '"areer Day, which is sponsored by the Asheville - Buncombe County Youth Council, is on Feb. 17 this year. The airman recently completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex., where he studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special instruction in human relations. Airman Burchfield is a 1975 graduate of Charles D. Owen High School in Swannanoa. ROBERT L. CURTIS Airman Robert L. Curtis Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Curtis Sr. of. Swannanoa, N.C. has graduated at Sheppard AFB, Wichitr alls, Tex., from the U.S. Air Force com munications equipment repairman course conducted by the Air Training Com mand. The airman, who learned to install and repair teletypewriter and com munications machines, is being assiged to Cannon AFB;, N.M., for duty with a unit of the Air Force Com munications Service. Airman Curtis is a 1974 graduate of DuVal Senior High School, Seabrook, Md. Kiwanis Roundup | An extremely interesting talk v.ith color slides was given by Kiwanian Wilson McMakin on January 22nd. He zeroed in of; Great Britain’s Crown Colony. Hong Kong - crossroad of the Orient located on the southeast coast of Asia, 800 miles west of Manila, the area known as the British Crown Colony is now made up of the hilly island, Hong Kong, Kowloon across the harbor on the mainland and the New Territories. Hong Kong was ceded in perpetuity to the British by the Chinese in 1839 following the Opium War and the Kowloon Peninsula was acquired in 1860. The New Territories came in 1889 and other small islands were acquired on a 99 year lease in 1898. We note that modem Peking does not recognize the legality of the lease. The British Crown Colony covers 400 sq. miles with the city proper occupying 30 sq. miWS of this. We think in terms of four million people. The vas: majority are Chinese and about 32,000 Europeans. They are bound together with the “almost mystical desire to profit - each to his own standard - the cult of money”. The island of Hong Kong is an extrusion of native rock - now hard and impervious. Although there is 85 inches of yearly rainfall, there is no water table because of this rock composition and hence a big water problem. During the troubled times with China. U S. and British ships brought in some 150 billion gallons of water to fill the resevoirs. It had to be rationed. The climate is very hot and dry in summer at 80 degrees and steamy hot in the Monsoon season. Winter is about 62 degrees. The approach to the Kowloon Airport from the South China Sea was described by Mr. McMakin as “exciting”. The Hong Kong area saw trees being used for fuel and buildings but now new trees have been planted. Besides rice, vegetables, beef, lamb and pigeons are now part of the diet. With many wealthy persons fleeing from Shanghai and other places and at the same time poor refugees flooding into the colony, we now find multimillionaires and the contrast of many, many others earning only about twelve dollars (U.S.) monthly. Industry in Hong Kong includes watches, optics, stone cutting, wood carving and ivory. There are many small shops, which with simple tools and expert hands, turn out exquisite work. There is a large export business in antiques and porcelains (now modern.) The color slides were excellent indicating dockside and street scenes. Particularly interesting were shots of people of all ages and occupations. The view of new one-room, high-rise apartments noted the attempt to care for the influx of refugees. A beach scene would rate, perhaps, as second to Rio de Janiero. The rickshaw is disappearing as it is now considered to be beneath the people. Good scenes pointed out the politeness of the individuals including that of children to children. Little theaters, market and festival scenes were enjoyed. Interesting, but depressing, were views of “junk cities” where "water-people” reside for a lifetime. Wallah Wallahs (little boats) and thousands of self-propelled san pans and junks rounded out the presentation. The Kiwanis j lid-winter conference, a training period, was attended by Robert Marshall, Wilson McMakin, Brooks Reid, President A1 Spring and their wives. |With Our Servicemen SGT. TOMMY L. For example, the home you purchased three or more years ago - and insured at that time - is probably worth much more than its original price and the insurance you presently carry on it. And if you haven't increased the coverage on your home and its contents in the past few years, you should give it serious thought.
