N.C. 28711 15 CENTS Commencement Excercises — Charles D. Owen High School Graduates 191 — One hundred and ninety one Charles D. Owen High School graduates were presented iheir diplomas in Graduation Exercises held Wednesday evening May 26 in the B.W. Spilman Auditorium at Ridgecrest Baptist Con ference Center. The Invocation was given by Frank Thielman. Miss Chrisann Ohler gave the Valedictory Address. The Graduation Address given by Lewis Anthony Wright. They were introduced by Rebecca leigh Bridges. Miss Brenda Diane Har wood recognized the Honor Students. The Scholarship Winners were introduced by Tony Wright. The Beta Club members were recognized by Miss Donna Pate. A tribute to Parents and friends was given by Ivan Byron Bailey. Charles A. Lytle, principal and Olen Sisk, Asst, principal presented diplomas to the iTaduates. An Anthem “The Way We Were” by Hamilsch was presented by the Owen Senior Ensemble. The Prelude, Processional and Recessional were presented by Miss Anita McCracken, pianist and Miss Janice Price, organist. The Baccalaureate Service was held Sunday May 23, at 8:00 p.m. The Baccalaureate Address was .given by Frank shelby flilelman ana David Charles Wilson. They were introduced by Robert K. Norton. The Owen Senior Ensemble sang the Anthem “The New 23rd Psalm ’ by Ralph Car michael. The Charles D. Owen Chapter of the National Beta Club consists of junior and senior students who have maintained a cumulative average of 90 on their high school work. The Beta Club exists to reward this meritorious achievement but even more important, it exists to promote the ideals of honesty, service and leadership among the high school students of America. Charles D, Owen Park Is Open To Public The Charles D Owen District Park on Bee Tree Road in Swannanoa had their opening ceremonies Saturday, May 22. Included among the many speakers were Roy Trantham, Buncombe County Commissioner, and Sheriff Tom Morrisey. Trantham commented that Owen Park was the first step towards mmm making the community an even better place to live. Sheriff Morrisey told the young ball players and the crowd that had gathered for the opening that com petitiveness will help bring people together. Local officials and board members who helped get the park built asked tor a silent remembrance for the late Jennings Johnson whose plans and work spurred the com pletion of the park. Lunch was served at about 12:30 for $1.00 a plate. Af terwards, the Babe Ruth League games got underway and continued for the rest ol the afternoon. THE CHARLES D. OWEN PARK Opening ceremonies were held Saturday, May 22. The speakers were flanked on both sides by the Babe Ruth League ball players, who played their first games that afternoon. Benje’s Bulletin Board Benje is looking great!! After a trip to surgery, Thursday (May 20), to remove dead skin the doctors are hopeful they will not have to do so again. They were very encouraging* about his progress for really the first 'hue. They will still'have to deal with a great deal of sear tissue but that will take some time. He has been laughing, joking and fussing at the nurses. He’s eating better and is out of the Onc-A Intensive Care Unit. He’s using his hands more too. Owen High School Athletic Awards Banquet was held Thursday i 1 ) FEMALE STUDENT RECEIVING AWARD — c Marianne Myers received the Female Athlete of the Yepr Award presented by Joe Tyson of the Junior Chamber Jaycees. night, May 20 at Ridgecrest Baptist Conference Center. Awards were given out after the banquet for the coaches and players. Mike Godfrey and Marianne Myers received top honors this year as the male and female Athletes of the Year. The Male Athlete of the Year Award was presented to Mike Godfrey by Lee Clapp, manager of the Northwestern Bank in Black Mountain. Mike also received an award for the Best Field Event Man in track. Miss Myers was presented the Female Athlete of the Year Award by Joe Tyson of the Jaycees. She also received the Most Outstanding Award in Volleyball. The Big 0 Outstanding Team award this year went to the 1976 Girls Varsity Basketball Team. It was presented by Johnny Raines. Others receiving awards were: (Key - M.V. Most Valuable; M.O. Most Out standing). Tennis - John Daniels, M.O,; Softball - Dorinda Owens, M.O.; Vollevball - Marianne Myers, M.O.; Girls Track - Luanne Price, M.O.; Golf - Rusty Worton, M.O.; Boys Track - Mike Reeves, Best Field Event Man; Mike Godfrey, Most Outstanding Sprinter. J.V. Baseball - David Ford, M. V.; Varsity Baseball - Kenny Patton, Best Hitter; Terry Robinson, hustler award; Ray Weaver, M.O. Wrestling - Tony Wright, M.V.; Clint Payne, M.O. Boys Freshman Basketball - James Davidson, M.V.; Brad LeVine, M.O.; Terry Twitty, Selfless Award. J.V. Basketball - Matt Black, M.V.; Marc LeVine, Mr. Hustle. Ninth Grade Girls Basketball - Debbie Mucklevan, M.V.; Donna Maxwell, Most Improved. Girls Varsity Basketball - Trophies were given to every player.
