Christmas parade ushers in hotidays 3H3 Owen JV cheerteaders RWRWRWRVayaaAy:^ Asheville's annual Christmas parade began at 3 p.m. last Wednesday, and several Valley groups joined in (he festive spirit. A total of 150 units-floats, bands, Scouts, and above ail, Santa Claus -rolled along (he route beginning at F&tton and Clingman Avenues, east on Rtton across Fbck Square to College Street. Heading off (he parade was (he Salvation Army Rod Float- collecting food from parade-goers for needy families for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Owen High Schoo) Marching Band Carver Schoo! Hamiiton wins drawing Ray Hamilton of Ridgecrest won the Carver School draw ing which entitled him to $100 of free groceries at Ingles last week. On Nov. 20 Gay Fox, long time Carver friend and supporter, drew Mr. Hamil ton's card at a school assem bly. Former student Marty Cav enaugh recently spearheaded a reunion of Carver graduates. Many students and their pa rents attended representing the five years Carver has been in operation. The book exchange is in full operation now and the project is well used by students. Each week a student can bring in up to five books and exchange them for five other books. The books taken out can be kept as the persona! property of the student or can be traded for other books !ater. Other activities in the past two weeks have induded visits to the Kaleidoscope project in Asheville and Projed Pride, sponsored by Buncombe County Quality Forward. A!coho! abuse prevention program On Monday, Dec. 7, Pete Banyai, co-ordinator of Com munity Education with the Alcoholism Program will be at Charles D. Owen High School in the school auditorium from 7-6:30 p.m. for interested per sons to discuss the comp re hensive substance abuse pre vention program for our sur vival. This is the second year Pete Banyai and his assistants have presented this program to ninth grade students at Owen High. F)ag Corps anti twirters News deadiine 5 p.m. Monday Pen Women to meet for Christmas party The Asheville Branch of The National League of American Ben Women will meet Thurs day, Dec. 3 at 12:30 p.m. in the Education Room of The Black Mountain Library for a Christmas covered dish lunch eon. There will be a Christmas carol sing directed by Gret chen Corbitt, followed by a charino of Christmas memor ies, "What Christmas means to me." A brief slide program wiii be presented by Resident Genevieve Randaii of a walk through Tryon Palace. Tryon Palace, located in New Bern, North Carolina, was the resi dence of the Governor of North Carolina. For information about reser vations call 669-6369. Basketbatt tournament at Warren Witson This weekend the third an nual Wamen Wilson Women's Basketball Invitational Tour nament will take place at DeVries Physical Education Center on the Warren Wilson campus. The tournament will begin Thursday at 2 p.m. as Caldwell Community College takes on Converse College. Brevard Junior College will play Wofford College at 4 p.m., Lees-McRae College will play Tusculum College at 6 pm., and Montreat-Anderson Junior College will play War ren Wilson at 8 p.m. The second and third rounds of the tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday with games at 2, 4, 6, and 8 p.m. The championship game will be the 8 p.m. game on Saturday.
