Larry Owen thanked for service Larry Owen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bumice Stines of Swan nanoa, recently received re cognition from Jesse T. De Rnsse Jr., mayor of Beeville, Texas, for his work with Little League there. At a city council meeting City Manager Joe B. Montez praised Owen's efforts this year as the organization put two new Little League fields and a new concession and press box to work. A letter appeared in the town's newspaper recently thanking Owen for assisting a youne hov on a little league team with cerebral patsy and for awarding him a special trophy for his participation. "Larry Owen, piease know that you made Jimmy one happy boy that night," his parents wrote. Owen is a 1966 graduate of Owen High School. A chief petty officer stationed at Chase Field Naval Station, he enlisted in the Navy in the fall of 1966. He and his wife Judy and their two children live in Beeville, Texas, where he is president of the Little League. Davis receives honorary degree Montreat cottage owner, Charles F. Retired since April, Davis is a consultant for the architec ture firm Davis, Speake and Associates. His firm has been responsible for the design of the Samford University cam pus since 1955. Three teachers /ofn Owen staff Three new teachers have joined the Owen High School faculty this year. Sarah O'Kelley, a native of Candler, is the new vocational disadvantaged teacher. Mrs. Barbara Crownover has returned to the Owen Riglish Depart ment, and Christopher R Stroupe has joined the Science Department at the school. Ms. O'Kelley is a graduate of Berea College. She has also attended Mich igan State University, UNC-Asheville, and holds a master's degree in counsel ing from W estem Carolina. She taught in an adult evening program and a job training program in Lansing, Michigan before returning to North Carolina. She was a Manpower Program job developer in Henderson ville and conducted training programs for Blue Ridge Technical College and local industry. More recently, she taught at Tliom's Orthopedic School and at &win High School. She has two daughters, Laura and Cynthia Collins, who graduated from T.C. Roberson. Mrs. Crownover taught Biglish at Owen for three years in the 1970s. She is a graduate of the University of North Caroiina at Chape! Hill. She and her three children, ages 10, seven and five, live in Asheville. Mr. Stroupe transferred to Owen from Reynolds High School.
