Road Contracts To Be Awarded Soon One Millin') Three Hundred Thousand Dollars Worth To Be Let In Charlotte District. Charlotte Observer. During the next three months con tract!! totaling approximately $1,300, 0()() for the construction of 35 miles of hard surface road and one bridge in the Sixth district, of which Char lotte is , the headquarters, will be awarded, according to W. C. Wilkin son, member of the sthte highway commission for this district. He expects to leave some! time next week for Raleigh to take up the mat ter of these contracts in definite and tangible form, he added. The specific program outlined by Mr. Wilkinson is as follows: Bridge over the Pee Dee river be tween Rockingham and Wndosboro, to cost $300,000. Eight miles of road, Concord to Me. Pleasant, cost $200,000. C/ftract will b:> let May 20. Six miles ot road Linoolnton to High Shoals, and 10 miles Lincoln t #i to Alexis, cost $300,000. Con tractu to be let at an early date. Eleven miles of road, Charlotte, to Mt. Holly, coBt $325,000. Six miles from Rockingham to new Pee Dee river bridge, cost $175, 000. Total number of miles, 35. Total cost of construction, $1,000,000. Total cosL of bridges, $300,000. Mr. Wilkinson added that already $0,050,410 in contracts has been let in the Sixth district during the past three years and that many of these roads have been finished. Agriculture Supply Bill Reported Out Measure as Presented to Senate Car ries $60,954,633—Provides for Boll Weevil Fight. The annual supply bill of the depart ment of agriculture, carrying $60, 954,633, was reported to the senate yesterday. The total is $11,886,820 un der last year’s appropriation, but $3, 124,808 in excess of this year’s esti mates by the budget bureau. The senate committee increased the apropriation over the house bill by $4, 370,890. As reported the measure car ries $46,300 for investigation and im provement of tobacco growing and handling, an increase of $4,360 over the house bill; $186,400 for investiga tion of insects affecting cereal, in cluding the alfalfa weevil, an in crease of 510,000; $256,920 for inves tigation of southern crop Insects, in cluding the boll weevil, an increase of $50,000 with the stipulation that $25,000 become immediately available $167,00 for investigation of truck crop pests, an increase of $12,000. The senate bill also carries $452, 510 for the enforcement of the pack ers and stockyards act, an increase of $225,770 over the house bill; $550, 000 for the enforement of the grain standards act, an increase of $50,000* $186,500 for the administration of the warehouse act, an increase of 23,500; $549,628 for the investigation of costs of retail marketing of meat and meat products, an increase of $25,000.
