Whereas the Woman’s Club of Shelby cooperating with the Kiwanis club anti other organizations with the aim of bettering Shelby have dedd ed that a “Paint-Up and Clean-Up Week” should be staged so that “The City of Springs” might rightfully enjoy her reputation as one of Western Carolina’s most beautiful towns, we hereby ask that the loyal and enter prising dtizens of Shelby observe the week of Monday, June 22, through Saturday, June 27, as official “Paint-Up. and Clean-Up Week.” That in the move to improve generally the appearance of the town the loyal and energetic citizens of the town lie urged to cooperate and make of the week a success. It is the further request of the city officially that the business men ol the town unite in their efforts during this campaign and in a manner they may select, aid the ladies of the town in their task of Ixautifving Shelby. 1 urthermorev it is the duty of every loyal citizen to do his Or her part in the campaign that will make of Shelby a more attractive nlaee in which to live. Let us not only have a clean-up campaign during this official week but throughout the year, for just a little carelessness mars the beautv of many attractive streets and homes, adds to the fire risk, and in mailv cases is<i menace to the health of the* community. Let us cooperate in this movement. T. W. Hamrick, John Schenck, jr.. John 1 Office of The City of Shelbv, June 18, 1925. WEATHERS, Mayor Toms, M. 1). Hopper AIdol men. CLEAN UP, PAINT UP AND LOOK UP. ,, Jf e.v>*ry to.'Yn in th<* *Soil,1> would imitate most of the towns in Florida the South would become noted throughout the world for the beautv and charm and cleanliness of its towns. otauiv ana Cleanliness, it has been said is next to Codliness. A dirty individual is neither cleani spiritually nor mentally. Dirt makes for ruin physical! v. mentally, morally 1 his is as true of a town as of an individual. The dirty town, the town full of rubbish, of untidy houses, of muddy streets of un sanitary conditions, is mm-progressive materially, morally and education . .Ne,thei' moral "or. material advancement flourish in dirty, unkemtot dwellings or in unkempt towns. ' 1 ll any town or city is ambitious for advancement, or if even a few of its men and women are ready to devote their time and energy to the bet terment of the community, the surest way to achieve success is to clean op—make back yards and trout yards clean, make streets clean and keep them clean, encourage the people, white and black alike, to beautify their homes and their yards, stimulate a love for and a pride in their homes and ih their towns, repair the tumble-down yard fences, paint up, make things as clean outside as they should be inside, and then that community will look up mentally, morally and materially. No community which does not clean up and paint, which does not do its best to have clean streets and clean yards, has any right to look up and face the world. I “A cheap coat,” said President Harding, “makes a cheap man.” In the same way it might be said, a dirty town makes a dirty people; a dirty people makes moral and material dirt and decay. It is the duty of all men and women to make their homes and their home towns just as clean and attractive and beautiful as possible, lie who falls short in this respect falls short of his duty to Cod and man, it matters not what else he may do.—Manufacturers Record. •7T fw.il I WHII mil I Getting started is the hardest part of paint* ing and varnishing. After the work is done you wonder why you put it off so long. The improved ap pearance and ineneas- I ed value of your pro- I petty, and the enlarg ed feeling of personal pride in your home more than repay the comparatively small cost of painting. And painting your home is a long term investment. ’jfj PAUL WEBB & SON —PREVENT FIRES— Accumulations of rubbish and inflammable scraps always are dangerous, since ihey supply fuel for the chance spark or flame. At least 75 j**r cent of the present annual tire loss is preventable and, therefore. can be avoided. Certainly there is no excuse for anyone to jeopardize their lives and property by permitting the uccilrfuilatoin of rubbish, old papers, rags, etc. Make the Clear’ Up and Paint Up campaign, a fire prevention campaign.
