Women Will Never Wear Cotton While Silk Is Available So Says Prominent Charlotte Mer chant Speaking af Slump In Cotton Goods Charlotte Observer. When the textile manufacturers of this section produce a combination of cotton and silk in patterns similar u the higher-priced silk materials, they will hare no trouble intriguing mi- i lady, but women will never go back to cotton soeks and plain calico an 1 gingham dresses to please the textile manufacturers! That is the opinion of L. A. Doxey, Charlotte retail buyer of piece goods, who has been catering to women s wants in the way of dry goods for , more than a quarter of a century. 1 Demand For Silk Time was when women were will ing to wear the plain cotton gown, but j that was a long time ago—a verv long time ago, and now with the pop. j ularity of priee in silk materials, the demand for cotton dress goods has I been on the steady decline for sev- i oral years. Many textiles mills have seen the i trend of women's desires and have sought to give them what they want, 1 Mr. Doxey says, and as a result w.< men are looking with more favor than ever on the combination cotton silk products that are 1 ring shown on the market. A beautiful cotton-silk crepe is being shown in the small printed pat terns that are so popular in the high er-priced materials right now. Another Sample Another soft silken material, the base of whicn is cotton, is called j charmeusette. This material is ideal i for lingerie or draperies. It is shown' in all the pastel shades popular with silk piece goods.' There are many voiles on the mar- ! ket now that are a combination of i cotton and silk that are very sheer and durable. Some of the designs of these cotton silk materials that are now being pro duced are so similar to the silk goods now on sale, that the difference is not noticeable, Mr. Doxey pointed out. Women have got to be pleased. It is they who have to wear the material they buy, and the manufacturer can rest assured that women—women o*' good taste—are never going back to the coarser all-cotton stuffs again neither in hosiery, dress goods or lingerie, Mr. Doxey says. Learning Manufacturers are gradually learn ing that a departure from the old order of things is at hand if they are to sell their cotton materials. The more enterprising are not only manu facturing something new, but they are exploiting it, showing the advantages of the material and how it can best be made up, the piece goods buyer de clares. Only when manufacturers of cotton goods give v.omen what they de mand, '"ill they popularize their pro duct, Mr. Doexy asserts.
