When J. W. Bailey, Raleigh bar rister. made known some months ago that he would oppose Senator Simmons tor the Democratic nom I ination this June, there were those ! ol us who looked upon nls campaign at a cause lost before it began “The mouse would give battle to the mountain we said, recalling whispered stories of the Simmons political machine, the Simmcns po litical wizadry, the Simmons politi cal vengeance upon those who op posed him. | Mr. Bailey, we thought, will con I duct for himself a whirlwind ora | torical tour, terming his opponent i "traitor" and so forth., and go be fore the voters June 7 having ac complished little more than the. splitting wide open cf the Demo cratic party in North Carolina. It has not been so. Mr. Bailey's campaign has been a dignified campaign of silence. Never has there been Intimation that his opponent, Mr. Simmons, is not look ed upon with utmost respect. There has been no mud-sling:ng, to at tempt to revive issues of the 1928 presidential campaign, no vocifer ated charges of "treason” no whirl wind stumping of the state. Mr. Bailey's campaign has been the campaign of a man who takes himself and his candidacy seriously, and looks confidently to the voters to do likewise. It is a campaign that' has gained for him indubitably, friends and supporters, for one thing because of its unexpected balance and sobriety. FOR SALE — ONE LEONARD 3 cioor refrigerator, 100 tos. And before we forget H. we wood be glad tu have all the folks from Shelby and Lawndale tu come tu Casar the 7 of June fur we aim tu lect a sheriff and some more feller; that day. We air expecting Simmerns an Baley tu be here that da, but if they air sick and can't come they will send sum little slips of paper with their names printed on 'em. But I started tu tell about tha< trip on tuther side of Wards crick, so I’ll tell hit rite now. I didn't do no good till Jong m the evening when I cum upon a feller on the cric kbank a fishln an a talkin tu himself. I seed rite strate that he wemt no account and that made me like him. Camel, introduced in 1913, when other cigarette brands were offering all sorts of premiums and similar induce ments, jumped into leadership solely on the basis of its built-in goodness. That statement, spread throughout the world each day on millions upon millions of Camel packages, stands as your guarantee of the maximum in smoke pleasure: It reaffirms on every package of Camels the steadfast aim to give smokers a cigarette in which every possible bit of the cost is put into real smoke-quality. The delightful, natural fragrance of Camel’s choicer tobaccos, combined in the smooth, mellow harmony of a blend beyond imitation—that’s what made Camel the world’s foremost cigarette—and keeps it just that.
