C.l Retire Bugler Boy After Thirty Ye.'irs Fort Bennlng, Ga.—The bug ler boy who was first over the walls of Peking during the Box er rebellion in 1000 was retired almost 30 year* to a day from the date of the historic exploit that brought him the congres sional medal of honor and an appointment to the West Point Military academy. Lieutenant Colonel Calvin P Titus, an instructor in the infantry school at Fort Banning, was on the way to Los Angeles.-where he will engage in Bible study and teaching. Titus was a young enlisted man when the Americans stormed the walled city of Peking. August 1*. 1900. The boxers opened a galling fire on the attackers, who rushed to temporary shelter near the foot of the wall. Titus’ colonel believed that if the wall could be climbed the Americans might surprise, the Box ers and gain entrance to the city: Titus volunteered. He climbed the 30 foot wall, pull ed a rifle after him and opened fire on the enemy, surprising them. Other Americans followed and built up a firing line, which gradually overcame Boxer resistance and led to the capture of the city. During the fighting Titus received a slight wound. Congress voted him a cadetship, at. West Point, and President Roose velt went to the military academy and personally pinned the medal of honor on Titus' blouse — BILLIARDS -- Visit (he Shelby Cigar and Billiard Parlor and. Chicken Wagon On Wheels Money Maker Farmers Discuss Method of Making Slonov on Chicks. Old Compost Heaps 'By J. A. Wilson' Bass Suttle says build your chicken house on wheels, get 100 dibs ready 'to feather, then hitch team to this bouse every fnonflng and move t,o the fields. Let fowls range over plowed land and stubble, gathering all the insects and wasted gram, and -he guarantees you will have fat healthy chicks, and never lose a single one unless the hawks get them. In (he evening sweep out the droppings on the land, and plow until every chick goes to roost then hitch up and drive home. You see he means for you to put in a full day, as well as save chick feed which is all very well If you wish • to do it that way. He says to tell j you he is applying for a patent, on.I this and you might phone or write him . The writer has tried this part of the way arid feels sure it will work out well Old Compost Heap Out sympathies go out to any family trying to make ends meet on j poor land. Brains count more than work here and a few ideas! might help. Years ago the com-, post heap was very important. We j had one always arranged near the; wash place where the home laun dry was done, so the “soap suds could go on it, The sweepings from the yards chicken roosts and smoke house with its' salt all went Into this pen with plenty of lime, ashes and rich* earth. We did not know then that the lime and ashes sent our ammonia off into the air, in-! fact, we did not know there was such a thing as ammonia then, but the rich earth held enough of it to make it very effe|tive when placed under the growing crop. All old bones, weeds and waste material went into this and kept the prem ises dean around our home. Some of this was used on gardens, and the remainder went under several acres of cotton in the orchard. I remember that cotton^ now how it grew and opened so pretty and white, no dead leaves and the ap ples, peas, peaches, plums and grapes how large and delicious they were With never a sign of blight Then the “sea fowl guano” came from South America and made it easy to get the commercial fertilize, so the old time com/ost has lost its place. I have been amused of late years to see some of my tdnapts come to my chicken roost to get fertilizer for their gardens, when they had more chickens than I. but let their droppings go to waste. If we ever get back to normalcy again R is going to take some of the old time ways with a lot of home-made stuff to do it. And I hope every one who has not got a pretty sure job will get back to the land, dig in, where they can have free air, water, wood and sunshine, and make the b\st of it possible. This will be better than standing in the soup or bread line later. EXECUTRIX NOTICE. I SOUTHERN RAILWAY SYSTEM Hoey Calls Republicans (Charlotte News ) The Democrats of the state are determined to let the people of North Carolina know that they are on the battle-lines and with wea pons in hands to wage militant war* fare this fall with the Republicans over the immediate issues that are to the fore, notably of course, that of prohibition. From the tone of Clyde Hoeys speech in Randolph county . the other day, he is one campaigner for the Democrats who does not pro* pose to let the Republicans get away with the claim that they com pose the dry party of North Caro lina and of the United States. “The Democratic paiTv” shouts the Shelby oracle, “brought prohibi tion to this state and passed eveiy law upon our statute books looking to its enforcement. Now the state is enforcing the prohibition laws with pnergy and zeal and there are at least twenty-five prosecutions by state officials to every one by fed eral officers. The Republican party eame out. for prohibition in North Carolina two years ago. They were suddenly converted and they are still professing faith. In the nation they have shown no special zeal for prohibition, and we see the Repub licans of New Jersey nominate 6'Wlgiit Morrow for the senate upon i wringing wet platform of absol ute repeal of the 18th amendment and we hear President Hoover an nounce that he will use all the pow er of the White House to elect this wet Mr. Morrow. That's how dry the Republicans are. They never let prohibition interfere with politics unless they can fool some Democrat by professing prohbition. The Dem acrats gave North Carolina prohibi tion and they are going to maintain and enforce it, but there never will be a nation enforcement of prohibi tion while the Republican party is in power. It will continue to make it a football of politics." The Broadcaster. Neighbor—You look: tired and sleepy, Janie. tattle Jane—It's that new baby at our house—he broadcasts almost all night long.
