Rickets Is Rare in Out-Door Children —Sunlight a Preventive oj Thu Disease Youngsters Who Get Their Daily Share of the Sun9* Fay* and a Balanced Diet Seem to Escape This Comparatively Modern Ailment, Say* Authority By ROYAL S. COPELAND, M. D. United States Senator from New York. Former Commit*irr>er of Health, .Veto Tork Olty. ON a recent tour I inspected some publie beaches. It was with great joy that I watched the youngsters romping on the beach. Their little bodies were s c a n t i ly covered by clothing Almost every pert wu ex posed to the rtys of the sun. How different | the picture was years ago. Children were advised not to j play in the sun for fear of be hen "d- A, />» tS% attire. DB COPELAND the mother* of that day would have been (hocked by such scanty clothing as Is now the vogue. When you and I were children, we were subjected to tba: terrible ordeal, taking the annual "Spring tonic" Usually this consisted of Borne form of cod liver oil. It has long been known that cod liver oil given to children would stimulate growth. Just why. we didn't know, Rtekete la a disease of modern life It wee unknoVvn to our et?ea tors. end le not prevalent today among people who enjoy sunshine end outdoor living. It l« usually spoken of as a disease of faulty diet. A diet tacking Vitamin T> wilt pro duce rickets, Tet a deficiency of Vitamin D. If there Is an abundance of sunlight will not produce the die ease. It Is apparent that both these factors are Important In the preven tion of rickets. Am a result of our modern ways of living. ticket# may anally be ac quired. Its prevalence Ul Children la common, and only within resent years ha# It been on the decline. It la an aliment moat common hi children under two years of age. It may occur In older children ea well as In adulta. It le ten timee more prevalent In artificially fed Infante, although It occasionally occurs In breast-fed Infants. Children living In dark homes, with no sunlight, ns In the city ten ement houses, are more prone to develop rickets. 1 have seen terrible cases m the alums of Europe. Babies that eleep poorly and are restless, should be suspected of rickets. A more definite sign Is the tosaing and moving of the head upon the pillow, a habit which soon rube off the hair from the hack ef the bead. Children with rickets learn to walk at a late stage. Their musrles and bone# are extremely weak and eannot support the body. They da not play wall with other children, and are backward la their general development. Bowed legs or knock-knees soon develop because of the muacular and bony weakness. The muscles of the abdomen are likely to relax, giving the child the so-called •‘pot-belly." These children. In addition to growth retardation, are anemic and ex tremely nervous. i Where rickets exists, or there Is a tendency toward tt. cod liver oil should be glean. As n preventive, rather than ms e curative measure, exposure to the direct rays of the sun should be encouraged. Infants should not be shaded from the sun. but should be reasonably exposed to the sun.
