A meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution was held at the club room on Tuesday after noon with Mrs. Hugh Logan, Mrs. Yates McSwain, Mrs. J. L. Parker and Miss Annie Hamrick acting as joint hostesses. After a business meeting the program was opened by the flag drill given by Mrs. J. L. McDowell. Mrs. Lamar (Sidney read an interesting paper on “Ellis Is land,” and Mrs. J. R. Dover gave a “Toast to the Flag.” Special music was furnished by Miss Wall, of Hen rietta, who played a concert com position of “Old Black Joe." Two delightful readings were given, by Miss Mary Lillian Speck, who read “Madame Butterfly." and by Miss ~ Dovie Logan who read “Hark to the Freshman." Friends here will be much inter ested In the announcement of the engagement of Miss Eleanor Levy, of Columbus, Ga., to Captain Richard Woodstock Johnson, of the U. S, army, who is at present stationed at Fort Bennlng, Oa., the wedding to take place at an early date. Miss Levy Is a niece of Mr. Roy Sl.sk, Miss Gussle Sisk and Mrs. Louis Forney and has visited them here on several occasions. She possesses beauty and a charming personality and has been a popular guest, dur ing her visits In Shelby. Mi** Millriyer 1* To Club. Miss Ruby McBrayer was a grac ious hostess on Thursday afternoon to members of the Ishpening club, entertaining at her home on N. l,a Fayette street. She was assisted In receiving and entertaining by her mother, Mrs. Mary McBrayer, and her sister, Miss Agnes McBrayer. After a brief business meeting the program was opened with the read ing of a very interesting article on “North Carolina Cotton and Its Uses" read by Mrs. Draper Wood. Mrs. A. Pitt Beam read an equally interesting article on “Problems of North Carolina.” stressing the pel lagra menace, its prevention and treatment. Mis.*. Mary Helen l,at timore played two vpry beautiful piano selections. A special guest on this occasion was Mrs. Paul Yates, of Charlotte, guest of Mrs. J. 8 Doftoh. The Bostic union of the B Y P U. of the First Baptist church was entertained at a. social meeting on Thursday evening at the home of Miss Egbert a North on Cleveland Springs road. in honor of Muss Montrose Mull, who will leave soon for a summer tour of Europe. This meeting was in the nature of a travel and floral social, attractive contests on travel and flowers were enjoyed during the evening. Special music was furnished by Mis.* Kath leen Hord. Upon arrival the guests found their places at bridge tables, eight of which were arranged about the rooms, and the contest play took place at these tables. Each table was spread with a pretty pink and white cover and centered with a vase of pink roses. The color scheme of pink and white tvas carried out in detail.
