Telegraph Companies Begin New “Timed Wire” Service For Patrons Extensive preparations had been completed and all was In readiness last night for the Inauguration to day of the new tinted wire service separately and Jointly by the West ern Union and Postal Telegraph companies. Both companies yesterday distri buted to all patrons affected a Joint ‘Telegraph Tinted Wire Di rectory" which lists by stales ntid ettlea all of the nearly 10,000 busi ness offices hi all parts of the coun try having the telegraph printers of Western Union or Postal or both Major Western Union and Postal offices have been connected by trunk lines In all cities and towns where auch lines will be necessary tn the exchange of communications between exclusive patrons of either of the telegraph companies. All mechanical changes and in structions to forces nece&>ary for the Instant handling of timed wire service messages had been complet ed last night, and the thousands of machines Involved in the service in telegraph offices throughout the country all stood ready to handle the business. As the first business offices began sending their lengthy communica tions by the new service today, tlie.se machines in telegraph main offices began their process of in stantaneously reproducing, In com binations of perforations of tape, the messages written on machines in their offices by patrons The tupes were then fed Into high speed multiplex telegraph Instruments, which In turn transmitted the mes sages Instantly to the distant cities addressed.
