Deaths And Funerals RODNEY B RAMON LONG Rodney Bcamon Long, 92, of Route 1, Ash, (Hickman's Cross roads area), died March 6 at his res idence. He was a retired fanner. The funeral was held March 8 in the Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel, Shallottc, with the Rev Robert Hargrove officiating. Buriai was in Bennett Cemetery. Born in Brunswick County on June 17, 1897, he was a son of Low D. and Rctlie Hickman Long. Survivors include three sons Lums Long and Richard Long of Hickman's Crossroads and Claudic Long of Thomasboro; a daughter, Loretta L. Sabin of Fort Lauderdale Fla.; three sisters, Ruth Benton of Lake Waccamaw, Beulah Bennett of Shallotte and Woodie Holdcn of Supply; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. MARY BATSON WEST Mary Batson West, 52, of Route 1. Bolivia, died March 5 at her resi dence. A graveside service was conduct ed March 8 in Robbins Cemetery, with the Rev. Avery Lumsdcn offi ciating. A native of Pender County, she was employed in the housekeeping department of Dosher Memorial Hospital, Southport. Survivors include her husband Lloyd Charies "Jimmy" West Sr. of the home; four sons, Lloyd Charles West Jr. of Birmingham, Ala., Floyd Ray West and Jimmy Dean West, both of Winnabow, and George Lee west of Southport; two daughters Mrs. Nita Faye Rife of Leland and Mrs. Cindy Bowling of Bolivia: two brothers. Frank Ross officiating Burial was in North wood Cemetery Born in New York City Sept. 10, 1905, he was the son of the late I nomas Anthony and Ida May Sadonic deVaux Fredericks. Before his retirement and reloca lion to Brunswick County in 1967, Fredericks was a restaurateur in New Jersey. He also had written for the New York Herald-Tribune and served as a volunteer firefighter for 25 years in Fort Lee, NJ. In Southport, he attended St. Philip's Episcopal Church and was a member of the Southport Lions Club, and enjoyed painting and writing poetry. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ranhild "Rae" Fredericks of the home; a son. Thomas Fredericks Jr. of Fort Lee, NJ.; a daughter, Mrs. Donnie Kirby of Southport; a sister, Mrs. Christine deVaux Fredericks Lerch of Wilmington; five grand children; four great-grandchildren; three nieces and five nephews. The son of the late John T. and Margaret Baldwin Caffee, he was a Columbus County native. Survivors include three sons. Burial was to be in the Pierce family ceme tery at Ocean Isle Beach. Survivors include two sons, Lawrence Floyd and Horace Floyd, both of Shallotte; five daughters, Lucille Trammell of Calabash, Thclma Hagcmann of Wilmington, and Pauline Hewett, Carrie Reaves and Cassie Mac Dail, all of Shallotte; 42 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and five great great-grandchildren. GUY EDWARD PANNELL Guy Edward Pannell, 73, of Leland, died March 11 at his resi dence following a lengthy illness. A graveside service was to be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, in Oleander Memorial Gardens by the Rev. S.L. Doty. Pannell was bom in Princeton, W.Va., Jan. 24, i9i7, the son of the late Charles B. and Julia Chambers Pannell. He was retired from the U.S. government and was a member of the Old Timers Sports Club. Survivors include his wife, Mis. Elizabeth Miley Pannell of the home; a daughter, Joan Pannell Womble of Wilmington; three sis ters, Mrs. Mildred Pannell Daniels and Mrs. Mona Pannell Perry, both of Chesapeake, Va., and Mrs. Virginia Pannell Richardson of San Diego, Calif.; a granddaughter and a grandson. JUANITA H. GANEY Jaunita H. "Goodie" Ganey, 57, of Route 3, Leland, died March 1 1 in New Hanover Memorial Hospital, Wilmington. The funeral was to be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Wood burn Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Earl Vaughn officiat ing. Burial was to be in Nelson Famiiy Cemetery, Leland. Mrs. Uaney was born in Brunswick County Nov. 1, 1932, the daughter of the late Frank and Dewey Clemmons Holden. She was a member of Woodbum Presbyterian Church and was em ployed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Survivors include her husband, Elmer D. Ganey Sr. of the home; a son, Elmer D. Ganey Jr. of the home; four sisters, Mr. Elnela Hewett of Leland, Mrs. Margaret McCumbee of Wilmington, Mrs. Beatrice Lee of Whiteville andMrs. Gertrude Hewette of Oklahoma; and a brother, Edwin Holden of Longwood. HEWETT A leadership workshop is sched uled March 17 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Longwood for church lead ers in Ocean View Associ ation. The ses sion will help them full fill, in their local chur hewett ches, the goals and objectives of the Woman's Home and Foreign Missionary Con vention and the General Baptist Convention of North Carolina. The training session starts at 9:30 a.m., with Mazie Stanley presiding. Presenters include the Rev. James Smith Sr. and Elizabeth Jenrette of Pleasant View; Joseph Butler of Mt. Zion; Irene Hankins of Friendship; Ethel Gore of Pleasant Hill; and William Marlowe. A question and answer session will follow the train ing period. Other participants will include liusi pastor the Rev. M.C. Herring, Mildred Stevenson, Eva Burney, Mary Thomas and Etherine Butler. There is no fee for this workshop and it is open to the public. Choir Competes At Fest It was an exciting moment for the church Saturday, March 3, when Cedar Grove Gospel Choir compet ed with the region's best gospel singers in a benefit festival at First Baptist Church in Wilmington. While the group did not win or place, the experience is to be trea sured and their contribution to the United Negro College Fund and the youths it serves applauded.
