Security Says Net Worth Increased During 1990 Security Savings of Loan Associ ation of Southport posted one of its most profitable years ever in 1990, Chairman William E. Bellamy Jr. reported to stockholders at the fi nancial institution's 79th annual meeting, held Jan. 17 in Southport. Bellamy said the association has assets of 5120,848,000, with a near record SI, 04 3, (XX) in earnings post ed for the year. 'This profit allowed Security Savings and Loan to add significant ly to its net worth or capital, which at year's end totaled $9,102,000 or 7.53 percent of assets," a news re lease indicated. All thrifts arc required to have a 3 percent capital to asset ratio, a benchmark the association far ex ceeded, said Bellamy. As a result, he continued, Security is "the soundest, safest thrift institution" in the three-county area it serves. Security holds S99,825,000 in mortgage loans, most of which are located in Brunswick County. Les ser amounts arc located in Colum bus and New Hanover counties. Based in Southport, Security has branch offices in Shallotte, Cala bash, Lcland and Long Beach. He said that despite uncertain times in the near future as the war in the Persian Gulf continues to af fect the economy and the lives of U.S. citizens. Security plans to con tinue to follow the fundamental lending and investment policies set forth by its officials over the past 80 years. Little River Medical Center Recruiting Staff Physicians While its three staff doctors arc leaving within a short time period. Little River Medical Center has no plans to close its doors, says Sharon Benton, project director at the Little River facility. "We arc actively recruiting physi cians and we are not closing the center," she said. The board of directors has begun a search to replace Dr. John Lang lois, Dr. Michael Goodman and Dr. Peter Danis, all of whom arc leav ing by mid-March, but for unrelated reasons. "We have some very good prospects that have expressed an in terest. We have interviews sched uled and will fill the vacancies soon," she said. Complicating the search, but not expected to block it, is a highly competitive marketplace, given the higher salaries possible for special ists and emergency room personnel and the demand for doctors created by the Persian Gulf war. Meanwhile, Mrs. Benton said the center plans to have physicians available to serve patients on a fill in basis. Some patients are being re ferred elsewhere for treatment, but the staff plans to "do all we can to see patients for acute and chronic ailments." The center and its staff of 10 serve approximately 6,000 patients, predominantly from Horry County, S.C., and the southern end of Bruns wick County. A number of those pa tients are indigents; the ccnter has traditionally relied heavily on feder al grants for its operations. Langlois, who had joined the center staff in July 1986, ieft Jan. 18 to pursue an academic teaching ca reer at the MAHEC Family Practice Residency Program in Ashcvillc. Goodman, who began work at the center in August 1988, is returning to California on Feb. 1 for personal reasons and may set up a solo prac tice there. Danis, the center's medical direc tor, has been with the center since August 1984. He will leave March 22 to return to his hometown of St. Louis, Mo., where he will teach family practice residents at St. John's Mercy Hospital, said Mrs. Benton, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and an uncle.
