"That is so when we bring it back up wc can keep it up for the sum mer," she said. Workers had found bolts that might not withstand the force of a severe earthquake, a design specifi cation for such facilities set by the federal Nuclear Regulatory Com mission. CP&L decided to shut down the reactors until the bolls could be fixed so the plant would not be found in violation of NRC rules. "We don't want to operate out of compliance; management thought bringing the plant off line the pru dent thing to do," said Ms. Bean. Others were broken, missing or inoperable. "We found several cases out of hundreds and probably thousands of bolts," she said."Wc want to do some mainte nance because we detected some vi bration," said Ms. Bean. The problem with the bolls was spotted by CP&L employees and re pair work was begun while a spccial NRC inspection team was on-site. "We told them about it," said Ms. Bean. "They're aware of everything we're doing." The NRC did not direct CP&L to shut down the units while the bolt problem was being addressed. The Unit 2 shutdown for mainte nance work was timed for spring, when demand for electricity is low er. Unit 1 had been scheduled for an inspection outage in June, which has been moved up. Among other work CP&L plans to get done while both units are down is rcplacc transformers on clcctrical bus bars, which Ms. Bean said should result in improved clcc trical reliability during the peak de mand period this summer. He returned home disabled, and was unable lu work again before he died when Mrs. Freeman was just 6. "There were a lot of hard times growing up," she recalled. "Since my mother couldn't work, we survived on my father's Social Security." After graduating from West Brunswick High School, she entered Cape Fear Community College (CF CC) and decided to follow her sis ter's example and study secretarial technology. "My sister was a typist," she said. "I used to love to watch her lingers move on the keyboard. I thought that was something I'd like to learn." In 1984 she earned a degree in ap plied science from CFCC and went to work as a legal secretary at a Wil mington law officc. Four years later she joined UNCW's News Bureau. "I got to meet and work with members of the local media," she said. "It gave me a chance to build contacts with people in the commu nity." In October she was promoted to a secretarial position in the chancel lor's office. "I get to work closely with the Board of Trustees and other UNCW administrators," she said. "It's been interesting to work with prominent members of the commu nity." She is married to Darnell Free man of Wilmington. The two were married six months after they met at Cape Fear Community College. They have two children, Jayson, 11, and Brandon, 9. Darnell Freeman works as a field representative for Carolina Power & Light and attends CFCC. "Darnell goes the extra mile to see that we get what we need," said Mrs. Freeman. For both Ann and Darnell Free man, working hard to get ahead has been a lifelong pursuit. "I want my children to see and understand that work and determina tion do have their rewards."
