FISHING REPORT Conditions Vary Across Brunswick Islands BY DOUG RUTTER Depending on who you talked to, fishing conditions across the South Brunswick Islands varied great] y last week. Some claimed it was "real slow" and others said "right good." Jesse Hayes of Captain Pete's Seafood at Holdcn Beach said the fishing was "fair" as far as he could tell. Anglers caught king mackerel and dolphin offshore and spots anil croaker inshore. Hayes said fishermen caught kings in the 30-pound range and dol phin weighing 16 to 25 pounds. "There have been more dolphin this year than I've ever seen," he said Monday morning. "Everybody that goes out who has never caught them before is tearing them up." Anglers also caught snapper, grouper and black bass in the ocean. "All in all it's been a fair week of fishing," Hayes said. Ocean Isle Marina Ken Shipley of Ocean Isle Marina said fishermen continued to catch lot of king mackerel last week from 5 to 18 miles offshore. Anglers also caught a few Spanish mackerel. In the waterway, fishermen have been pulling in trout and blucfish. "It's kind of slow," Shipley said. "I believe the hot weather has slowed it down and made the fish go to deeper water." Sea Mist Camping Resort "The fishing has been real slow," said Baker Harrcll of Sea Mist Camping Resort at Brick Landing. Fishermen caught spottailcd drum and Spanish mackerel in the ocean and flounder, spots, speckled trout and finfish in the waterway. Pier Fishing Pier fishing wasn't as good last week as it was a few weeks ago, but pier managers arc still pleased with the catches and surprised by the un usually large number of spots. "Fishing's been right good," said Curtis Williamson of Ocean Isle Beach Fishing Pier. "It's been a pret ty good week I would say." Williamson said anglers pulled in mostly spots and trout last week. "We have a lot of people fishing to day and they're catching fish," he reported Monday. At Sunset Beach Fishing Pier, an glers have been catching spots, whit ing, flounder and spottailcd drum. "The spots arc still biting," said pier manager Ed Kayler. "I don't un derstand why or how but they're still biting." Kayler said fishing has been pret ty good "for the amount of people we've had and the heal." Gil Bass of Holden Beach Pier said fishing is slower than it has been in last few weeks, but it's still better than normal for the season. "They're catching a few flounder and still catching some spots," Bass said. "I'm a little surprised by the spots." Bass said fishermen are catching trout early in the morning. Surf fish ermen arc starting to catch spots. This Week's I IUC T~UI~ lur IUIC JULY HIGH A.M. P.M. 11:18 LOW A.M. Marine Fisheries Com mission may adopt a rule that would allow the state fisheries director to regulate all kinds of fishing gear along the coast at certain times of the year. Under a controversial rule that look effect July 1, Fisheries Director William Hogarth can issue procla mations restricting the use of com mercial gear within one half mile of the beach, public fishing piers and marinas. If adopted, ti e new rule would al low Hogarth to regulate recreational gear as well. Ii would apply each year from the Friday before Easter through Dec. 31 , just like the current rule. t Commercial fishermen have re quested the rule change. A public hearing on the proposal will be held Tuesday, July 27, in the New Hano ver County Courthouse (Court Room 302) at 7 p.m. The Marine Fisheries Commis sion is expected to decide on the proposal at its next business meet ing, Aug. 6 and 7 in Beaufort. If the rule is approved, it's expected to take cffect Oct. 1 . People who can't attend the hear ing arc invited to send written com ments to the Marine Fisheries Com mission, P.O.
