SPORTING SCENF South's Williams Earns Free Ride At Greensboro With all of this talk lately about heat advisories and drought, I refuse to waste this valuable column space writing about baseball or football or any other outdoor sport. r"^ ~~ It's been too hot to take on any outdoor activities other than walking to the mailbox every other day. 1 went golfing a couple weeks ago and bare ly lived to tell about it. So enough with the great out doors. There arc lots of exciting in door sports to discuss. In fact, the mailpcrson delivered some good news from the basketball world last week. , - - ? ^ * _j After two seasons as a walk-on player at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, former South Brunswick High School star Greg Williams has been awarded a scholarship. Williams, a 6'4" junior guard, started 24 games last year for the Spartans and is expected to contribute heavily this season, which will be UNCG's third as a Division 1 school. The Bolivia native received the team's Most Improved Player Award last year after averaging 6.4 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. As a fresh man, he averaged 2.1 points and 0.8 rebounds. UNCG Coach Mike Dement expects Williams to provide excellent ex perience in the backcourt this winter, according to the coach's summer prospectus. "As a sophomore Greg was valuable because of his ability to create scoring opportunities with his quickness, his rebounding and by coming up with loose balls," Dement said. Williams shot just 42.5 percent from the Field last year, but converted nearly 82 percent of his free throw attempts. He had 33 assists and 11 blocked shots. His 25 steals were second most on the team. "Greg has worked hard this off-season to improve his jump-shooting range, and we hope that he has improved as much between his sophomore and junior years as he did between his freshman and sophomore years," Dement added. As a senior at South Brunswick, Williams averaged 17 points per game and helped lead the Cougars to a 25-4 record. He was South's male athlete of the year in 1991. Williams also was a football star at Boiling Spring Lakes, earning the team's MVP Award as a senior. He was named to all-county and all-confcr ence teams and received honorable mention for the all-state team. UNCG joins the Big South Conference this season ? the league that in cludes Coastal Carolina and Campbell University. The Spartans also have games slated against Florida State and N.C. State of the ACC. When the Spartans meet the Wolfpack Dec. 2 in Raleigh, Williams will be reunited with former West Brunswick star Ricky Daniels. Daniels and Williams dominated local high school basketball in the early 1990s.
