Southport Youth Found Guilty In Accidental' Assault An 18-ycar-old Southport resi dent, who claimed he accidentally kicked another young man in the head, was found guilty in Brunswick County District Court Wednesday on a charge of assault inflicting seri ous injury. The defendant, Wesley Charles Johnson Jr., was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended on the condition that he perform 72 hours of community service and not com municate with or go near the prose cuting witness. He was ordered to pay his victim's medical bills, S60 court costs and SI 00 in community scrvicc fees. In a statement made to Long Beach Police Officer S.B. Massey after his arrest, Johnson said he was on the Long Beach Pier at about 9:45 p.m. April 15 when his cousin approached him crying and saying that Jason Gouge of Old Fort had called her a "stupid, no-good for nothing" person. Johnson's statement said his cousin asked him to go to a nearby beach access "and scare him." He and two friends found Gouge silting on a fence rail with a female friend. "1 was going to kick the rail be side Jason's head to scare him, and when 1 did, 1 was bumped from be hind and accidentally kicked Jason in the head," the statement said. "He then fell off the access onto the beach." According to the warrant. Gouge fell approximately 15 feet and suf fered a "serious injury consisting of a broken wrist and a concussion re quiring hospital treatment and fol low-up surgery."
