We all look at our natural
resources and sigh when we think
of the people who would like td cut
it down, dig it up, or make use of it
for monetary reasons. Did you
know the oldest conservation pro
gram we have was when Presi
dent John Quincy Adams pro
tected a 1,377 acre forest of live
oak wood to be preserved for
building Navy ships? Located on
Route 98 near Seabreeze, Florida,
it is a woodland and a coastal
habitat that has all but disap
peared and one you may wish to
stop and walk throughwhenever
you are driving south.
Jean and A1 Hendricks are
home after a month aboard their
“Sea Rover,” a 31-foot Willard
‘irawler which carried them up the
Bay into exploring the western
shore. They spent some time on
the Potomac and sightseeing in
Washington, D. C., and in the
Solomons. It was a thoroughly
delightful experience with fine
weather.
One of the problems our village
has—seemingly so far unsolvable—
is the emergence from nowhere of
delightful and various-sized
animals who appear at our doors,
begging to be taken in. Marilyn
and Jake Stern on Whittaker Point
Road have two lovely male pup
pies, part Collie, that need a home
or homes right away. They are
black, brown, and white, very
young, cute and healthy looking.
Call Marilyn at 249-0344 if you
know who owns these dogs or if
you would like to provide them
with a home.
Happy July birthdays to Selma

Mason last week.
Great grandmother Ruth Mason
and grandparents Faye and
Jackie Mason are eagerly hearing
news of their 5-week old grand
child, Jarett Wayne Shields.
Vicky, the Masons’ daughter,and
John Shields are the proud
parents.
Phyllis and Robert Fasnacht
had the James Olivers of Lupton
Drive as dinner guests this past
week.

Shellfish and cholesterol
Question: Must I stop eating shellfish to reduce
my level of cholesterol? Answer: No, says Dr.
Howard Eler, professor at Albert Einstein College of
Medicine. Just to match the cholesterol in one egg,
' you’d have to eat more than one dozen oysters, or two
small lobsters. Shrimp is also relatively low in choles
terol.
Some folks are still dishing out fishy advice because
they don’t know that shellfish data from the 1940’s were
all wet! Shellfish have a clean bill of health.

Tales of interesting places and
much sailing talk was the order of
the day at our house on Monday
night as Rachel and Euticus Wenn
told of their 14 years aboard their
30-foot Columbia, now in dry dock
for repairs and a paint job at
Sailcraft Marina. Lilly the dog
listened and agreed with most that
was said. A Princeton professor
ofmusic and a symphony conduc
tor by profession, the Wenns gave
up the academic life to run the
family tobacco farm. In 1971 they
began living aboard their boat and
have had many adventures. After
the danger of hurricane is past,
they plan to sail to Jamaica and
winter in Yucatan. They have
spent man/ months sailing in the
Caribbean and the Bahamas and
are typical of the sailors who stop
in Oriental, pleasant and easy to
know.
