The funds , may pro vide a spurfNbut if their acceptance involves surrender of local spirit, the final plight of the municipality may be worse, than before the money ar- We are not saying that we should forego all of the advantages come from 'outside sources. We suggest, however, that, very often, the time and energy expended . in seeking outside aid could effect sub stantial 'development. Moreover, a city or town grows ' through the initiative and ability of its people and no temporary advantage is worth sacrificing these attributes. How To-Influence Our Children Mothers and fathers of Hertford often wonder whether certain activity of their young sons ' and daughters is exactly the wise thing for young people. . The anxiety of parents about the conduct of their children is under standable. Naturally, they are sin cerely concerned. They want their boys and girls to grow into fine men and women. There is a way in which parents can influence the conduct of their children. It is not by denouncing their customs or punishing the young people. After alL growing boys and girls require sotpe form of amuse ment and social life." It is1, natural for them to congregate together. ' If parents dislike current activities, it might be a good idea for parents to provide other activity. Before older people complain of what , younger people are doing, it behooves them to bestir themselves -and see whit they are doing for the boys and , the girls. ': , Sulj;ct Of Circukr Information on control of "stored grain: insects, which cause- heavy losses' on North Carolina farms each year, is given in a new publication Just issued by the State College Ex tension Service. It is Extension Cir cular No. 825, "Control Stored Grain Insects." ( . . i . - The circular, prepared Ay James T. Conner, Jr., in charge of extension entomology, is considered particularly timely' because of the bumper , corn crop which farmers in the State are harvesting this fall. - Several species of insects are. re sponsible for damage to stored grain, Mr.' Conner . says. Fortunately, .he adds, the same treatment, if properly employed, will control all of them. The entomologist recommends first that old gain in the crib be cleaned up by means of fumigation, or that it be removed from bins, where the new crop will be stored. Then, as soon as the new grain is put into this clean storage, it should be fumigated. A number of chemicals may be used. From the standpoint of the' farmer, says Air. uonner, tne most practical fumigant is either a mixture of three. parts ethylene dichlonde and one part carbon disulfide and carbon' tetrach loride, or a mixture of one part carbon disulfide and four parts carbon tetra chloride . . The dosage will vary according to temperature and tightness of the bin. Further details are given in the new circular, copies of which may be obtained free from the local county agent or by writing to the Agricul tural Editor, State College Station, Raleigh. a C-e .Iid-y dt Cw.L-, , or tLig notice will be pleaded ia 1-r of their recovery. CLASSIFIED AND LEGAL NOTICES Watch Yourself Physically About the only time that the aver age citizen of Perquimans pays any attention to his, or her, physical well- being is when illness or accident puts them in bed. ;- . 4 This is, unfortunately, the truth in regards to mdst persons. It is a re flection upon the intelligence- that men and women are supposed to have. .... The neglect of the body is only comparable to our negligence in re- . sards to mental powers. Every In dividual has abundant opportunity tcJ improve intellectually, Dut lew oi us bother ourselves to do so. . ' When it comes. to the realm of spiritual , improvement, the average individual goes into complete eclipse, except in extremely rare and trying moments. Those of us who believe in the possession' of a soul know full .well that our spiritual growth "Is possible and most of us believe that it is the great function of human existence. - In spite of this belief and the faith that moves us along life's highway, we carelessly -drift along without bothering very ' much . about prin ciples or the lack of them. Few of us attempt to guide our , daily lives by the eternal verities that we pro fess to accept This . is a little bit foolish,: when one begins to reflect " upon It- , The encouraging thing ; about in dividual growth is that it requires no committee 'meetings, no mass purpose and no assistance frpm other people. It is one job that the in dividual can plan and complete upon personal initiative. The only ques tion is', "WhenVill we begin?" , .-. t ,i .' i I r , Thinking, not growth,' makes man hood.
