r?CH , - PROPHECY IN THE BIBLE International Sunday School Lesson 'For November 14 Golden Text: "He hath shewed thee, 0 man, what is good: and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and walk humbly with God?" Micah 6:8. , i Lesson - Texf; . : Amos 5:21-24; 7: . II . .1 K M inn ft A T L -..-.. , ' As every student of the Bible) knowsj he Old Testament is divided "into four main divisions:-The Penta teuch (the Books of the Law), the TT-' i i At. 1 Tll I and the Phonhetical Books, which are" divided into vtwo parts,; four Major ' Prophets and twelve Minor Prophets. Jt is with the Heorews that .the "pro ' phet". is most- closely- associated, just as it is with the Greeks that .we .as sociate "philosopher,'' There were a great many prophets in the history f the Hebrew race but the first recognized as such is prob ably Elijah, the non-Writing prophet. " The prophets whose written messages 11 are -found in the Old Testament are grouped as major and minor on the lengtn oi tneir writing, ratner tnan upon the importance of their "mes ' sages to the people among"whom they ' lived. Of the thirty-nine books in the ,' Qld Testament, seventeen are books of prophecy. . . The prophets were courageous men who represented God and stood in the - breach between men and ruin. Usu ally, they were called from among the people, having neither political posi- , tion nor priestly lineage to recommend them to those 4 among whom they ? served, but depending rather upon the authority contained in a message straight from' the heart of God. The prophets were not fortune- - tellers or, soothsayers, as we know the category, but rather revealers of eterna truth. They were messengers : of God to the people of their own day, for the good of .those to whom they spoke. ' .They "Were -desperately concerned over moral, social and po litical conditions which prevailed in the day in which they lived,, recogniz? - ing no distinction between the secu 1 lar and the sacred. The main1 problem of Israel was the maintenance of sin cere religious worship. From the very - vegijutuig vj. nil e&iBieiwe, vue uauuii was troubled with, two tendencies idolatry and externallsm and the pro phets were quick to raise .their voices against both vices. . While we are quick to condemn the practice of idol ; atry as sinful, idolatry is neither as enervating nor as insidious as the sin of externalism the mere formal prac- ' tice of forms without the spirit of worship or the dynamic of God. ; Amos warns the people, against "these sins. The people were going ; through the forms of worship -hav-. ing their feast days, their assemblies, V their burnt offerings and everything Mhat went 'with an outward form of . religion,' but when it came to their everyday lives and the practice of their religion in their .relationship - with their fellpwmen, their forms of worship became hateful in God's sight. We wonder what the opinion of Jehovah is on the religious worship of our people today. So often we go (Concluded on Page Two) J American Bible .
