The teachers have been in volved in the field testing of new social studies materials for the K-3 student. The materials, which emphasize the conceptual approach to social studies learning, were written by North Carolina teachers under the direction of the social studies consultants of the State Department of Public In struction. The materials emphasize a learning approach in which students build on their knowledge of concepts (families, for example) from the earliest level through high school. Content, teaching strategies, and pupil activities are organized around main ideas. Several schools in the State were chosen to field test the materials this year. Attending the conference was Mrs. Helen M. Woodard of Perquimans County schools. Also participating in the field testing were William D.Tice, Mrs. Ruth E. Winslow, Mrs. Miriam H.
