It's good to seriously consider fire prevention each year and October 4th-10th ia y Fire Prevention Week. October being the moot furnaces ajod beating systems are often used for the first time since spring, it's an appropriate month to assess fire danger. Fires most of them preventable - claim over 12,000 Americans each year and cause damage estimated at almost two and a half billion dollars. They coat Jobs, ruin businesses and natural resources and destroy irreplaceable peraoaal possessions daily. Thirty-three Americans die each day in the United states! The National Fire Prevention Association urges all of us to be more careful with cigarettes and matches, to see that electrical cords are in good condition, and to be careful with flammable liquids, which should be properly and carefully stored. In addition, it's suggested that a mental and visual check of homes and offices be made during fire prevention week. Dare Devils! There'll be all sorts of dubious devilment down in Dare this week. But don't get upset . . . it's all in fun! October 1 through October 9 has been set aside by . these good people to celebrate the Dare County and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Centennial. For over a ull week, the Spirit of Festivity will regin through out the county. Why don't you visit Dare County this week-either to just observe or to join in the fun? You'll be welcome if you do. The recent death of Jimi Hendrix ; from an apparent overdose of dnifs is the latest of many evidences of the likely dark end of : the road for unknowing kids who abuse their bodies with drugs. 1 Most Americana probably never heard of Hendrix but be was a big deal among cultists and admitted he used at least four drugs. His most popular song was about a "haze," which referred to drugs. " At 24, he collapsed in London recently and though sent to a hospital never regained . con sciousness. Any unnecessary death is a tragedy. And un necessary death at such an age is especially so. But it should be a lesson to young Imitators who know they can handle drugs. When the gears of a machine mesh together in motion, things begin to happen. Wheels turn, and power is transmitted to every part of the mech anism. Prayer is something like that. Individual prayer is a vital and sacred thing. Each of us has moments when we and we alone must turn to God. And collective prayer mass prayer can be a tremendous force for good too. It is as if thousands of "spiritual gears" suddenly were meshed together into a unit directed by a single purpose. On Worldwide Communion Sunday, remember the power of collective prayer. Join with your neighbors throughout the globe by attending church and praying both for peace and for each other. , , Scriphtm tdnlctl by the American Bible Society CsprtfAt "70 farter AfomMnf Srvic; Inc., Stroking, Vg . International Sunday School Lesson for October4,1970 ' MEMORY SELECTION: "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined In our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God In the face of Jesus Christ" - (2 Corinthians 4:6) LESSON TEXT: Acts 17:22-28A; Ephesians 2:84; Hebrews 1:1-4. ' Today we commence a new series of lessons which are Intended to highlight the growth of individuals in the tenets and beliefs of their faith. It is not enough just to believe - we must practice what we believe, to be worthy of the name of being true Christians. There is a vast difference in professing . and doing! . In the first place, it ia essential that faith become a daily pattern - not one to be assumed on a suitable occasion, and forgotten in between. It cannot be expressed by attendance in Church on a Sunday ... and ignored the other six days of the week. It should be a constant awareness, a daily growing. The doctrines of Christianity is more than a set of rules to be accepted; it is a life to be lived. It ia a call to responsibility, both individually and collectively. The degree to which we answer that call is the measure of our true acceptance of Chriat and all He stood for. The Christian accepts the fact that God, in the beginning, revealed Himself to man, many times, and in many ways; he also accepts the fact that Christ's advent and self-sacrifice is typical of God's concern for mankind; and, Just as Christ died for all men, so is Christian faith the ultimate heritage of all mankind. Salvation can only be attained through the , grace of God. God's acceptance of man's striving ia not to be attained throv'i mere Up service; rather, it is attained through ' hum!, jb acceptance of God's will and obedience thereto. It is won through personal perseverance in the face of great difficulties, of inner strivings, and great personal endeavor. . God, In His great love for mankind, provided a way of salvation in His Son, Jesus Chriat Such an all-embracing gesture can only provoke an all-embracing answer. We are - constrained to measure our response accordingly. Chriat was an unique Person. Anything or anyone who accepts Him cannot but be anything but unique also. This is . not to say that mere rote provides salvation. Lip service counts as naught In God's eyes; it is too cheap, too easy. Rather art we Judged by the hardships which we face bravely, with faith; by the dedication with which we ap- . proach the concepts laid down by our Father, as personified in the Ufe of Christ There are many faiths in the world as we know it today. We think our way In the right way. For us It ia. And as dedicated Christians, truly believing, we necessarily feel it ' is right for others. We 4 be Insincere If we did not! However, wo must guard against a tense of haughtiness and superiority. We must keep an open mind, as Christ did, and demonstrate, by our personal lives, the superiority of our faith. Only by our faultless conduct, our concern for others, our Joy in the sense of oneness in Christ, can we effectively spread the Gospel la Chriat we have found the answer to life's deepest and most personal needs. And no man Is different from us. Created in God's image, we are brothers. We are therefore constrained to ahare what Is good in our lives, what Is sustaining. To this end we must ever be aware that "lip servke1' is not enough to convince, Just as it is not enough for , God, We must demonstrate, in our Hving, in our believing, in -. our cosSdence and Joy, that Christianity has a dimension that is secularly its own!
