" "" , w.J - . ' t '" " Sixty Plus Club Rally In Hertford Text and Photos by Kathy Marren 5- 1 Til 47 ,0 Mrs. Leulla McCausland, the oldest member, celebrated her 93rd birthday at the luncheon. She is shown here with the president of the 60 plus club, Mr. L.H. Harris and Her tford Mayor Bill Cox. Si Members of the Tidewater area's "Sixty Plus Club" congregated in Mr. and Mrs. Ward (Bud) Miller's backyard for a luncheon and birthday party on June 11. The group was touring the historical sites of Edenton prior to the get-together. The club now consists of over 450 members compared to the first club's membership which was six. That was nearly 20 years ago, and since then they've come a 4ong way. -To join the club, you must be 60 years of age or more "and two meetings. There are no dues, and the group is self-supporting. Lt's described as a social one, and doesn't sponsor money making projects. They tire sponsored by the City of Norfolk Recreational Bureau which furnishes their meeting places. The group meets every Wednesday to enjoy socializing and activities such as, bingo, bridge, canasta, knitting, embroidery, crafts,, andj; a list of others. v ;;4i: Sv :; -: 1 mwrwr - . 4 f Shown here is the cutting of the birthday cake. He's 92M and jokingly calls himself Mrs McCausland's "baby". 3 3 m L : ,4 DO THE CHERRY PICKERS These sixty plusers enjoy picking wild cherries in the Millers' back yard. mia. ivuae ivclliudll, Jf Community Center Supervisor teaches them crafts and joins them on their many activities. She said they were a lively group and she enjoys working with them. She has been with them four years. As one member put it, We are not a bunch of elderly people sitting back watching life go by. We're" a group of senior citizens that ? are enjoying our retirement and making the most? .of life." This couldn't be truer. The group is extremely active. They take trips and tours or have engagements nearly every week. For example, the group went to Atlanta, Ga. in April and saw "Six Flags", as well as their May trip to Washington, D.C. where they met and talked with Congressman William Whitehurst. During June a New England tour was scheduled which proved to be an exciting experience. "These things keep you involved in life, you don't just sit home in a rocking chair.
