Art of Quilting Being Revived by Young, Old By JAN CHRISTENSEN N.C, State University The old art of.quilting is being revived in Johnston County by both young and old. ,' ;.'?; -..v..-.. In order to learn th quilting techniques, inter ested homemakers attended classes in quilted pillow tops, notes Mrs. Patricia Brown, associate home eco nomics extension agent. One" young homemaker, Mrs. Pete Sturm of Smith field, developed an interest in quilting after finding a set of quilted fclacemats in a craft shop for $35. After attending the class, she is , making a similar set at a -much lower cost. For her next project, Mrs. Sturm plans to make each of her three boys a little farm boy quilt using their old worn out blue jeans in the farm boy de sign. This is an excellent way to recycle old clothes into something useful and as a keepsake for each child, the agent verifies. MAKE UTENSILS Some everyday kitchen utensils can be adopted so that handicapped home makers can use them easily. A handle holder can steady a hot saucepan on the range, a wooden bowl holder makes it possible to stir or mix ingredients with one hand, and a peel ing and cutting board, con sisting of a formica-topped base board and nails, makes it possible to grate carrots using one hand. . Members of the Lowe Senior Citizen Club of Reid.sville were impressed with these easy-to-make gadgets. So at a future meeting they plan to make some of these articles and give them to needy persons, or donate them to nursing homes. . ; Lydia Scott, assistant home economics extension agent, thinks this is a con BANQUET RANnilTT Pot Pies SChunk Tunal n ib n owe r-1 MAWELl -t LIMIT ONI COWOH IAMHY CUSTOMER MUST PAY SALES TAX 'Z VO AfTEt SATUHDAY MM.t,fP ' ON NICUiAR RETAIL PRICE .Lip WITH THIS COUPON AND TNS PiMCHAn t one immt om COUPON HI MMIIV VOID MHOt MTUftkMT carton bfiri.l WliAK2ll i Urtfc OX, t AJ . $ 1 00 fyiS V .. ... i ONEIlAKa nnmciE J j tnciL HAKUAUNt 3 g S C MOWMOOWIMMOJMIMMIIS . n r...i, .- HX.FUUD ;q r r r i r structive way for senior citizens to, spend their time. j PLAID PANTS After seeing a fashion . show oilmen's clothes made by Columbus County home makers, Mrs. Edith Greene decided to try her luck. Piuliiuns Weekly, Hertfotd, N.O, Energy Tips This is another in a series of Civil Preparedness Energy Conservation Tips from Perquimans County Civil Preparedness Office. Did you know that washing clothes takes a lot of water. An 18 pound load ' can use as much as 48 gallons! You'll be money ahead to wait until you have a full load before using the washer and dryer. Sort laundry into similar colors and types of fabrics. This will help you get proper wash loads and better cleaning, i Badly soiled clothes should be soaked instead of being washed twice. If your washer doesn't have a soak cycle, allow the tub to fill, let the agitator work long enough to create suds, then turn the washer off for a while, After the clothes have soaked for several minutes, turn the washer on to continue with the cycle. Whenever possible, wash clothes in cold water using a cold water detergent. Many of today's fabrics don't need or can't tolerate hot water. Be sure you use the proper amount of detergent. Check instructions on the package. Not all detergents produce volumes of suds. Hang clothes on a clothesline when possible, or use the shortest drying cycle that will get the clothes dry. Underdrying all fabrics, particularly polyesters and knits, will extend their life, prevent gradual shrinkage, FOR SALE House Plants Marshall Bateman 105 Charles St. 426-5416 THE m. "unfused" if they're not treated property cautions Miss Tutterow. For one thing, not all fabrics fuse well. Some times the iron temperature and the amount of time re quired for fusing can dam-. age the fabrics you're try ing to stick together. Or the fabric you're working with may be too slick or sheer to hold a "fuse" job. Miss Tutterow suggests you experiment first with a scrap of fabric and the fusing material.
