North Carolina State University. By MARION SWINDELL We were thumbing through a book of chil dren's prayers the otuer day. It contained the usual beautiful little prayers for children, and they were all well done-striking illustra tions, and in general good taste throughout the book. There was one prayer in' this book, however, tnat was outstanding! It was il lustrated with the picture of a little boy lying on tiie grass with his puppy dog beside him. The puppy had one of his forepaws ban daged, and here is the pray er: : "My pet does not feel well today. God. He doesn't want to play with . me. Please help me to take care of hint . . ." A child's prayer? Yes, but isn't that the true pray er that all people should pray? "Help me to care . . ." Here we find no selfishness-just a petition for guidance in service, I Our thought to remem ber is: "THOSE WHO HELP-ALWAYS CARE." Swindell ' Funeral Home HERTFORD, N.C. RENEWAL ' ' Ephesians4:17-32) - ' Henry Ward Beecher is reported to have said: "The church is not an art gallery for the exhibition of eminent saints, but a hospital for the' curing of weak ones." Another has said: "The church . is not an organization of good people, it is an organization of sinners. It is the only organization in human society that takes sinners into membership just because they are sinners. It is the only organization that keeps on saying, week after week, year after year, age after age: 'we have done those things that we ought not to have done, and left un done those things that we ought to have done.' This is the glory of the church, its uniqueness in human society, that it lives per petually on the vitality and realism of its own repen tance, its contrition, and its plea for God's help and forgiveness." , At the same time the apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit demands that the Christian be different. Be Different, Ephesians4:17-19 Now that the believers have come under the lord ship of Jesus Christ they must not live as others who have not believed in Christ. Paul's readers had once walked or lived "as other Darden Department Store 109 - 111 N. They had been "born again." They had become new creatures in Christ Jesus. They must now become what they in reality were the children of God. . What was there about the "other Gentiles" of which Paul's readers were to be different? Paul expresses in the strongest terms their old way of life. "In the vanity of their mind" means that there was an emptyness, an aimlessness, a hopelessness about them. They neither saw nor knew of any real goal or purpose in life. "Their understanding (of spiritual matters) was darkened." They did not know God. Not knowing God, they were alienated from God. Sin separates man from God. Man cannot have fellowship with God when there is unconfessed, unjudged sin in his life. "If I regard iniquity in my heart the Lord will not hear me." This lack of un derstanding and their being alienated from God was caused by "the blindness of their heart." It would seem that these things worked together to bring about their condition. It cannot be said that they were not to be blamed. Individuals may allow themselves to become "past feeling". Dr, William Barclay says that the terror of sin is its petrifying effect. A person can give himself 3 264-2318 OOC1 ... tovi . OIL CO. . V. The Perquimans Weekly, Hertford, N.C, "over to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness." Here is life without any sense of shame or regard for what others think. Paul comes now to em phasize the need to be disciplined. Be Disciplined, ' Ephesians 4:20-24 What has been said of "other Gentiles" must not and cannot apply to them. They have not so learned Christ. From this word "learn" we get our word "disciple." -: .S Verse 21 does not raise a question as to ' the genuineness of their salvation experience. This is a conditional sentence in the Greek language which actually affirms the fact that they have heard Christ, and have been taught by Him. This teaching in Jesus had called for a putting off of the old way of life and to a putting on of the new man. This new man had been divinely created in righteousness and true holiness. The soldier who would be a more effective soldier must continue to prepare himself. So it is with the Christian. This can come about in the Christian's experience by being renewed in or by the spirit of his mind. The mind of the Christian needs to dwell upon things eternal. BIBLE QUESTION FOR THIS WEEK : ; Would you suggest a workable plan for a person , to begin and continue daily, prayer and reading of the Bible? ANSWER: Begin reading the Bible 4 minutes each day and praying 3 minutes each day.. Do this for 7 days and see, what happens in your life. At first this may sound too little' time to give to so important, a matter. But is it more than you are presently giving?'. You will very likely be. giving more time before the 7 days are up.
