He became our President during difficult times." With calm steady leadership, he has guided our country toward better economic conditions. One thing we can especially be thankful for and that is our country is not in volved in any war. Our young people are doing much better lately. Their at titude and outlook on life is much better than it was five or six years ago. The hippie movement has largely disap peared. Our college campuses are quiet. The young people seem more interested in getting back to the serious job of preparing for their life's work. They seem to respect Presi dent Ford for the good leadership he has given our country. There are many things we are concerned about such as violence on TV and the high crime rate. There's a lot of things happening in our country we don't like, but we should be thankful that we are not involved in any war, that the economic situation is improving somewhat, and that our cities and campuses are relatively quiet. While most voters in N.C. seem to prefer the Democrats for statewide and local offices, they should remember the good things President Ford has done. We should also remember that there needs to be some restraints on big labor and big labor is trying to defeat the President. The people of our state would .be wise to give our 13 elec toral votes to President Ford and help him win another term. . . BOBBY SIMPSON Newton Grove, N.C. HOUSES ' INUNDATED BY EXCESSIVE RAIN:-A steady 18-hour downpour Tuesday afternoon had inun dated two Negro houses in the low lying section of King Street. The ditches, unable to take care of the torrential rains of Monday, Monday night and all day Tuesday, had overflowed until water was nearly two feet deep within the two houses. Fur niture floated around inside the dwellings and occupants were forced to move out. The houses are one-story frame affairs, so there were no second floors to move to. The unceasing rains had covered every level, or low lying section , of ground, sidewalks and streets with water varying in depth from three to twelve inches Tuesday afternoon. Farms were flooded and work in the fields was at a standstill. Several farmers took ad vantage of their enforced idleness to attend court in Hertford Tuesday morning.
