Dignitaries! Souvenirs! Awards! Queens! Kings! Horse Show! all the "trap pings" for a successful fun filled Peanut Festival, which is only 10 days away, are well under way. With all the ground work being laid, the two main necessary ingredients needed to put the capital on the "h" in happiness is good weather and people! Over the first there is no control but, the faith of the spon soring Edenton-Chowan Band Parents Association is jstrong. Because the special events planned for-October 30 involve many community organizations and something for everyone, faith in community support participants as well as spec tators, is equally as strong. For after all, who can resist the ritual of celebrating the fall harvest, affording one's self the luxury of a day given to pure enjoyment, and contributing to wor thwhile band project so ef fortlessly?!?! Through the efforts of many, events have been planned for all agjs and in terests and it's still not too late to join in the fun. . During the intermission period of the Gymhhana Horse Show at the American Legion Fairgrounds, the town of Edenton Recreation Department will supervise games for everyone old enough to chew a peanut up ri.tt&.U&vdlffy f p cr jff Sertoma which can ac commodate handicapped citizens all over N.C. The problem is that the -camp is old particularly in the area of water recrea- tion. Unemcumbered by braces and other orthopedic divices, many handicapped persons discover a new sense of mobility and freedom in the water and for this reason swimming has become an integral part of many physical therapy pro grams. This type of therapy has been denied at Camp Ser toma due to the absense of a pool. Peanut Festival (.'.... , T1TT "W T to age 18. Those who think they really know how to get a grip on things will have the opportunity to prove it by entering the greased pig cat ching contest. Peals of laughter and squeals of pigs are sure to be crowd pleasers. There will also be single and double peanut sack races, a peanut spitting contest, a peanut' nose roll ing contest, a peanut slant board face, and a peanut spoon race. Each race will be divided into age categories (5 and under; 6-8; 9-12; 13-17) with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ribbons awarded in each category. Anyone interested may sign up in advance for any event at the recreation depart ment at the Edenton Ar mory or just join in at the event. A Festival without a king and queen would be like get ting a deluxe doll house for Christmas, but not getting the first stick of furniture to go in it. Not this festival!! All clubs and adult organiza tions in the community have been given the chance to sponsor the Mr. or Ms. Peanut of their , choice. Students in grades nine through 12 have also been in vited to participate. The adult and teen-age kings and queens will be chosen by the "nickle" vote. So wherever jars are available, pitch in the nickle for the King and Queen you'd like to see in the Parade. Those having a favorite Rolling If you were a little child in a wheelchair who loved to swim but couldn't because there was no pool, you'd be pretty sad. If you knew so meone was collecting pen-. nies to build you that pool, you'd probably think they were pennies from Heaven. You can help that person by putting pennies or other contributions in the jars displayed at your local mer chants; and or contacting any Perquimans Jaycee for more information about how you can help. There will be an adult and youth (18 and under) divi sion for judging. Categories will be in making breads, desserts, main dishes, can dies, or other dishes with the use of peanuts, naturally. Rules and entry blanks have been distributed to various - organizations and points in the county. However, anyone interested may ob tain a copy of the rules for the contest by contacting Mrs. Gladys White at the Chowan County Agriculture Extension Department, 482-8421. Judging for the event and ribbons will be awarded on October 30 at the American Legion Building. If you've never tried cooking with peanuts, be sure to pick up one of the Peanut Recipe Books, which will be given away, com pliments of the North Carolina Peanut Growers' yssociation. The Wonders of the Amazing Little Peanut will never cease. The versatile peanut will also be honored as an object of creative talent and ex pression.
