President of the North Carolina Lung Association. 'In making the announce raent Mrs. Brinkley stated, "Lung diseases constitute t one of the nation's greatest ' threats. Forty-seven million Americans, children and adults, suffer from one or more chronic respiratory diseases. Susan Lawrence's leadership will help us a great deal in the fight against emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, tuberculosis, and other lung eripplers," said Mrs. Brinkley. "As State Christmas Seal Chairman, she will be an effective am bassador for lung associa tions throughout the state." (Letters bearing Christmas Seals are now being delivered to the homes of North Carolinians.) 1 . The next meeting of the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission will be held Nov. 4-5, at the Ramada Inn in New Bern, N.C. The public is invited to attend all meeting sessions. North Carolina's Citizen Band Radio Operators desiring a 1977 automobile license plate with their call letters have until Nov. 1, to make application (MVR-38) for the special plate. Ac cording to the Registration Section of the Division of Motor Vehicles, license plates may be obtained for passenger vehicles and private trucks. Only one plate per vehicle will be issued and the vehicle must De registered in the persons name to whom the calls let ters were assigned by the f.C.C. The Sept. 1976 Report of Local 1 percent Sales and Use Tax Collections, Dept. of Revenue, State of North Carolina, report that the County of Perquimans col lected $10,014.39 in taxes. . ' The U.S. Consumer Pro duct Safety Commission, Wash. D.C. reports that 105 death certificates involving flammable liquids are on file in the National Injury Information - Clearinghouse for 1975. Although the death Certificate reporting system Is not statistically complete and specific products are not always included on the certificates, some useful in formation can be extracted. While in Greece they will visit the Acropolis and tour Hertford, N.C., Thursday, October ducts involved victims be tween 25 and 64 years of age, and almost three out of four were men; the majority of the deaths resulted from burns, although ingestion and aspiration of flammable liquids and asphyxiation from vapors were also reported. Approximately 46,000 in juries associated with flam mable liquids were treated in hospital emergency rooms in 1975. Males out number females- in flam mable liquid injuries by almost 3 to 1. Portable gasoline cooking stoves and - portable gas heating stoves each were cited in seven death certificates. Adults were the sole victims in deaths associated with cook ing equipment; four males and three females were in volved. Carbon monoxide poisoning resulted in four deaths; burn fatalities resulted from two explo sions and one clothing ignition. The largest diamond found in the eastern United States, the 344-carat "Punch Jones," was found by Grover and William Jones while pitching horseshoes , in their front yard in Peterstown, West Virginia. Picked up in April 1928, the rough gem was kept around the house for 15 years before anyone realized it was actually a diamond. (Reported in Na tional Geographic -Society News Feature.) REFRESHER COURSE BEING TAUGHT A refresher course for the recertification of Emergen cy Medical Training (EMT) personnel is being taught in Hertford on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7-10 p.m. The Continuing Educa tion Department at College of the Albemarle is sponsor ing the 20-hour review. Class instructor is Marsha Massey and classes are con tinuing through Nov. 16 at the Perquimans County Rescue Squad Building. GED Centers Are Approved RALEIGH - As of this week all 57 technical institutes and community colleges have been designated as General Educational Development (GED) centers. The approval of the 56th and 57th schools to offer the GED program came Oct 7 by action of the State Board of Education. The two schools approved to offer the program this week were Caldwell Com munity College and Rockingham Community College. In 1973, 6,500 GED cer tificates were issued com pared with 13,700 in 1975. Locally, the College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City participates in the GED program, j j- . .
