Page 4-Tht Ptrquimans Weekly, Hertford, N.C., Thursday, December 30, W News Of Community Happenings: &peb pie People & Places ' By FREDA NELSON Let's consider a few an cient customs in other coun tries and our own as we ap proach the New Year, 1977. People and Places are highlighted in these customs. 1 The celebration of New Year's Day has taken many different forms in different countries. It was observed as a holiday in ancient Rome. Exchange of greetings, the giving and receiving of presents, wishing good luck, mas querading, and feasting were features of New Year's Day in the time of the Em pire. It appears to have been the one great holiday observed throughout the en tire Roman Empire. The French called on each other for presents. The Scots gave New Year's presents. The observance of New Year's as a day of calling and social intercourse was introduced into the colonies of North America by the Dutch of New York. The Presidents of the United States, beginning with Washington, have been ac customed to receive on New Year's Day. This custom however is falling into disuse. In the United States peo ple attend church and par ties are held on New Year's Bethel Harvey Point News Vanora Brothers ' ' The Bethel Extension Homemakers Club met Dec. 22 at the home of Mrs. Vanora Brothers. Achieve ment Day and the Christmas program were combined. Mrs. Clarice Newby gave the History of the club, and the achievement report was given by Mrs. Annie Jones. Topic of the meeting was "Christmas Dinner, Serve It Safely." During the meeting a quiz on the Christmas Alphabet was played and enjoyed by everyone. Gifts were ex changed and refreshments were served during the social hour. Also, on exhibit were some of the items which members of the club had made during the year. Recognized with gifts . from the club for their birthdays were, Mrs. Arinie ' Jones, Mrs. Mary White, Mrs. Alice Thatch, Mrs. M. B. Taylor, and Mrs. Vanora Brothers. Guests at the . meeting were Mrs. Eula Riddick and Mrs. Hattie Williamston. Mr. and Mrs. Steven Vaughn, Jr. are the proud parents of a baby girl, Faith Nicole, born Dec. 20 in the Chowan Hospital. The Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Sun day School Department will present a program entitled "One Can Chase A Thou sand," Thursday night at the Perquimans High School. The program will begin at 7:30 and the public is invited to attend. Congratulations go to ' Mrs. Annie Jones who ; celebrated her birthday last '' week. j Mrs. Easter Creecy spent ' the Christmas holidays in Tennessee with her i daughter Delorise. The Riddicks and Miss Willie Riddick were . entertained at the Brother's ' on Christmas Day. Visiting with Mrs. Maggie 'Brothers during the - Holidays were her children, Murray of Newark, N.J.; 'k Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Adams ; and children of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and grandson, Donald J James of Newark, N. J. - Spending the Christmas : holidays with their parents, L"r. and Mrs. Spencer l-lllott, were Beverly ;ott, Spencer Ray, Leo, 'win, and Emma Vaughn. r. ar1 ' rs. Eiil Talley. . ..j T-Jey, and Katie Eve to "watch the old year out." , Often heard on New Year's beginning: "turning over a new leaf," cleaning the slate," and let's make the new year better than the one just ended." But more familiar are the numerous New Year's resolutions which are made' by statement or sometimes written down. And many times filed away and promptly forgotten. Someone has said that "it's dumb to make New Year resolutions," and ad ded that the important thing to do is to try daily to be a better person which would suffice for all resolutions. Many would not argue with this philosophy but would agree that it may be difficult to carry out. Superstitions also abound on this special event. For in stance, if a male enters a home first on New Year's day, it is suppose to bring good luck for the rest of the year. However, if it's a female who walks across the threshold first, then bad luck will ensue. So welcome New Year, 1977 and in whatever custom or manner is celebrated to welcome the beginning, may the best year of your entire life be the one that follows.
