By NELLIE M.SANDERS director, Pettigrew Regional Library ) a HOOTS ENLARGED STAFF The Pettigrew Regional Library a three new members on its staff with the selection of a lew librarian and two assistants for the Perquimans Coun y Library in Hertford. Wayne Henritze, a graduate Qf the University of Tennessee at Knoxville,. has been named to succeed Mrs. Lucy Whedbee who is retiring after many jyears of faithful service to the community, j Welcoming Henritze to the newly-renovated county. library will be Mrt. Addie Keegan who is flow employed full-time and the two. recently-employed i part-time assistants, Myra Felton and Dianna (Dina) Hurdle. Hours of service have been lengthened since the Perquimans County Library joined the Pettigrew Region in October of this year and further expansion is under consideration, ' HOLIDAY THOUGHTS The custom of sending Christmas cards is such a nice one that it is too bad the postal difficulties have led to its decline. Maybe it is my im agination, but ft seems to me that fewer cards are being sent and received in recent years. As a-consequence, the ones you do receive from old friends are all the more welcome. , r-;; '.. ; i'r-h-y Each of the libraries in the Pettigrew Region (Shepard Pruden Memorial Library in Edenton, Perquimans County Library in Hertford, Tyrrell County Public Library in Col umbia and Washington County Library in Plymouth) is decorated for the season in an individual style and there is a spirit of gaiety that is infectious. The colorful mobiles which are displayed in the library in Edenton make a delightful f addition to the traditional decorations. Traveling was part; of the plans for at least three members of the library staff. Mary Eileen Bieler, the Children's Coordinator; went holidays. The newest member Perquimans County Librarian, planned to use the holiday week for moving his belongings from his former home in Knoxville, Tenn. to hisnew residence in Hertford. Not to be outdone by the other jnan on the staff, Kim Varin, Washington County Librarian, did some moving too. His family moved into a new home and he decided to move almost every adult book in the library. In order to"make reference work more convenient for patrons and staff he organized the switching of non-fiction to the front section of shelves and fiction titles to the back of the adult reading room. A slight temporary confusion may be the immediate result but everyone hopes it will provide an improved arrangement. , W-. ' . : SCREECHES THIN SKIN The diagnosis for my problem, a flare-up of eczema resulting from the drying effect of overheated rooms, cold weather, unknown irritants, etc. boiled down to a simple life sentence. The dermatologists explained that I was born with thin skin. I hope that Jimmy Green, the Lt. Governor-elect, who was the featured speaker at the Albemarle Area Develop ment Association (AADA) banquet held in Edenton recent ly, -does not suffer from the figurative equivalent of thin skin. State Senator Melvin Daniels made an embarassing 1 faux pas when he concluded a glowing introduction of the speaker by naming him Janes Hunt, the present Lt. Gover nor and Governor-elect But perhaps that's better than no introduction at all, which was the treatment accorded the newly elected officers of AADA, including The Gray Owl as one of three vice presidents. Her service to the communi ty and her gracious hospitality as hostess for the staff meeting was recognized by Mrs. John Biggers, chairman of the Perquimans County Library Board, who greeted us on behalf of the board. Angler's Cove Restaurant did a splendid Job of serving ' the meal to all the employees of the Pettigrew Region plus our guests: Miss Mullen, Mrs. Biggers, and three other library board members, Mrs. George Barbee, Mrs. Jesse Harris, and Mrs. Erwin Turner. Their statements followed a series of presen tations by commission and council members and local government officials spotlighting the achievements: of the program. General Assembly is "a positive, not a negative body." , Representatives .Chris Barker of New Bern, Dan Lilly of Kinston and Wilda Hurst of Jacksonville all noted the need for coordina tion of planning and permit programs, a primary func tion of the coastal 'area management program. Douglas Powell of Wil mington encouraged the legislators to allow the Coastal Resources Commis sion to complete the job that the General Assembly had assigned. Powell explained that land use plans had been produced under the Act, but the selection and designa tion of Areas of En , vlronmental Concern was not finished, and recommen dations for streamlining the extensive permit programs which govern so much of the development activity in the coastal area have not been finalized by the Commission for presentation to the legislature. - Advisory council member Bill Gardner of Edenton, to announce the aaaooiation ol J Of(iee Hoar j appointMent 335-292.1 000 ' And let yout Production Credit Association help. 1977 holds a lot of promise, and with the proper planning, it could be a most profitable year. He said that guidance and support were ' key ingredients in the plan- : ning effort. ; Aurora Mayor Grace Bon ner, whose small communi ty rests atop one of the ma jor phosphate deposits in this country, said that plan ning and the resulting urban renewal funding had been vital to the continued ex istence of her community. The active mining area is adjacent to the town and residents feared the mine would consume the com munity if steps were not taken to preserve the town. Mayor Bonner said, "We now look forward to the con tinued implementation of our plan and the , improve ment of our environment and quality of life." Jerry Hardesty, a com mission member who has served as an agricultural extension agent in Currituck County for eighteen years, pointed to benefits the pro gram offers to agriculture, particularly the eventual reduction of pressures which lead to the conversion of prime farmland to other uses. Maintaining agricultural lands is a goal of the program.
