Teachers Not Buildings
To The Editor
I've road both "Letters to the Editor" of recent date
written by Mr. J.P. Perry Jr. and Miss Lynn Hurdle (and
others). Both are concerned citizens but with divergent
views on the bond issue of Nov. <th.
* Mr. Perry did dwell on "taxes" ? unavoidably. How
elae can the "Bond" and its benifits be measured in coat? I
saw Mr. Perry talking not against education but for get
ting more of it per dollar spent; with an eye toward any
future commitments the county may have to assume. It
was gratifying to see young Miss Hurdle (and associates)
interested in a subject normally the concern of her elders.
Sadly, to my thinking, they took a popular but mistaken
.view on several points as follows :
1. That older people, whose children have finished
school, have lost their concern for the welfare of young
?folks.
.3 2. They equate newer buildings with improved
?education.
? I agree with Mr. Perry that the old school plan can be
brought up to '"Standard" and thus save money which, to
my mind, would be better spent encouraging the best
teachers to come here.
It is the teachers, not the buildings, that impart the
knowledge so badly needed by young folk to cope with
today's lifestyle.
