Entrance Sunday school lesson REVERENCE FOR GOD John 4:24 Christ taught the Samaritan woman that true worship is not confined to a particular place, but that it must be spiritual and must be done in an understanding man ner. Worship is a proper recognition of the worth of God, an adoration of His person and a veneration of His name. True worship of God is a very important factor in the spiritual development and fruitfulness of God's children. It elevates character and improves conduct. Inasmuch as "God is a spirit," the only worship which can possibly be acceptable and honoroing to Him is that which is offered in spirit and in truth by His children. Matthew 6:24 Christ made it clear that two masters, whose in terests are entirely incompatible, cannot be served by the same person at any given time. To attempt to serve two masters is a futile effort. Our Lord said, "Ye cannot serve God and mammon." The meaning of "mammon" may be a little obscure, but it seems to be the god of riches. What a pity that it became necessary for Christ to speak to Christians about their yielding to the temp tation to make riches their God! What an insult to God to claim allegiance to Him and then to place a personal trust, love, and delight in riches! What a revelation when money gets scare and the first place that a church member economizes is in his support of the Lord's work! True and devoted servants of the Lord give Him the preeminence in all things, and rightly so. Exodus 20:3-7 Because the human heart will worship someone or something, God requires the worship of each of us, and refuses to tolerate worship of any other. The Second Commandment prohibits the use of idols or images in connection with the worship of God. Since God is Spirit, there is nothing in heaven or on earth to which He may be likened. To attempt to represent the living God by that which is without life and made by man is useless, sinful, and truly a debasement of deity, for which there cannot be any justification. The worship of images is expressly forbidden in the Scriptures because God is jealous. While God visits the penalty of bad fathers upon the children of the third and fourth generation of them that hate Him, He also visits the reward of good fathers upon their children. In verse seven god requires reverence for His name, and forbids its use flippantly, irreverently, falsely, in sincerely, deceitfully, or profanely. The Hebrew word, which is translated "in vain", means falsely, emptily, frivolously, and profanely. People take God's name in vain when they speak irreverently of it, when they use it in idle discourse, when they speak hypocritically honor God with their lips while their hearts are far from Him, and when they use His name in swearing. Many think profanity is a trivial matter, but God considers it a grievous sin. It is an evidence of the lack of both in telligence and Christianity. Luke 4:8 When Satan tempted Christ Jesus to comply with his will rather then conform to God's will, our Lord defeated the tempter on the ground of His humanity and not on the basis of His deity. When Satan tempted Christ did not enter an argument with him, but refused to yield and quoted the Word of God to him. Inable to stand before the incisive power of God's Word, Satan fled and left Christ alone for a season. Matthew 5:33-37 When Christ was here inthe flesh many were ac customed to lying, just as is the case today. There grew up the unnecessary and sinful habit of trying to make others believe their falsehoods by using oaths. It was thought that when a person made an oath that he would certainly tell the truth, which was far from correct. Knowing that swearing under oath does not increase the truthfulness of one's words, and that making an oath will never change the value of one's testimony, Christ uttered His prohibition against all vain and useless swearing. A person who is honest and truthful need not resort to the use of an oath. Using God's name may im press some listener, but it will not make any liar honest. + + + The Sunday School Lesson is sent in by Clear Creek Baptist School in Pineville, Ky. ? Obituaries ?
