1978-79 JV PIRATE BASKETBALL TEAM - They are, 1. to r., front row, Robert Mallory, Donnie Parker, Stanley White; middle, Alvin White, Johnnie Frierson, George Jackson, George Burnett, Nate Carson; back, Fronzy Miller, J. White, Tony Hickson, Graig Perry and Melvin Wilson, (staff photo) By TONY JORDAN "Our team looks very strong," Coach Pete Hunter said about this season's JV Basketball squad at Perquimans County High School. The team finished second to the Northampton Rams in last year's tournament. The Pirates have four of the five starters of last year's group returning. Tony Hickson and George Jackson, two quality players, will be in the for ward spots again. Jackson is a fierce competitor while Hunter describes Hickson as "the best shooter in PCHS". Johnnie Frierson and Nate Carson will take com mand of the guard posi tions. Also returning from last year's team will be Alvin White, a good sixth Hunter prepares team man. All three should give the team the experience that is needed. Although a little inex perienced now, Hunter feels he has a great amount of talent in his freshmen. Heading the list is Melvin Wilson. Hunter said, "This is Melvin's first year, but he has shown some mighty promising potential in practice. He should make a great center." PROBABLE STARTERS ? Starters for the first game, Dec. 1 at Plymouth, will likely be, 1. to r., front, guards Johnnie Frierson and Nate Carson; back, forward Tony Hickson, center Melvin Wilson, and forward George Jackson, (staff photo) Other freshmen that will could start some games. see some action will be Robert Mallory, Stanley White and Craig Perry. Perry's height and his shooting ability for a big man should help the team. Mallory and White will be used mostly in the second half because of their speed, but Hunter pointed out with a little practice both The JV Pirates should have a big winning season. There are no real weaknesses to speak of. They have an unusually quick team and above average height. With any luck and no injuries, the JV's could very easily win the conference this year.
