Letters From Our Readers: Editor's | L Mailbag Board urged not to raise taxes I am sorry that I cannot be present at your budget meeting tonight. However, I would like to make a few comments on the proposed budget for 19*40. * you already know, I think that the county budget should be reduced to the point where a tax levy of $1 per $100 valuation would cover the coun ty's needs. You know better than I that it can be doae. More importantly, it should be done. All of you were elected to office by the citizens of Pqquimans County and agreed to represent us wbin you took your oath of office. Your decision noi? to reduce the tax rate would truly represent the fefe&ngs of the tax payers of the county. t understand that all of you are under a great deal of pressure from the many heads of offices, departments and the superintendent of schools, all claiming they need every cent of their budget and cao't possibly cut another penny from their pro posals. And right here is the crux of the matter - they all appear personally, at your meetings to per suade, insist, cajole and demand more money for their departments and it becomes more and more difficult for you to hear that "silent majority" the taxpayers of the county, because they are not presenting their budgets to you. On the contrary, they are relying on you to speak for them and that means among, other things, resisting the pleas and demands for ever increasing budgets. TYou know of course, that no department head will eyer voluntarily reduce his or her budget. Last year you raised the tax rate .05 per $100 valuation. This year you propose to raise it again. You, gentlemen, are the only pepsons in the county that can stop that trend. -You simply have to say "we're not going to raise it again." I believe you should do that because it is sound fiscal policy and that would truly represent the feelings of the tax payers. J;P. PERRY, JR. 366 Front St. Hertford, N.C. : No respect shown at graduation - Last Friday night at the Perquimans County High School graduation exercises, I, along with several tiihers with me, noticed the same outlandish behavior that is getting worse each year. It is a pity that there are people who do not have enough common decency to show respect to the graduates and those involved with graduation (Speakers, guests, singers, etc.). Every year they show the same disrespect and graduation is now at the point that most people dread going. I know that it's usually hot and uncomfortable in the gym, but those are circumstances that we can not change. Loud talking so others cannot hear, yell ing at the graduates as they receive their diplomas, and leaving (in large groups) while someone is speaking (especially during benediction) can be stopped. I feel that if someone can't act like an adult human being, it would be better for all con cerned if they would stay home. I hope that next year things will be different and the class of 1980 will have a little more to be proud of. Give them the respect they deserve that other graduating classes didn't get.
