regional meet
The Perquimans County
Jaycettes hosted 5 coastal
area Jaycette chapters at the
annual regional meet held
recently at the ARPDC
building in Hertford.
Jaycettes attending the
meeting were from Edenton.
Gates County, Williamston.
Plymouth, Mattamuskeet, as
well as Perquimans County
Keynote speaker for the
event was Mrs. Maybelle
Cousins, volunteer coor
dinator (or the Tidewater area
March of Dimes, who spoke to
the group about Project JOY,
an acronym for "Jaycette
Outreach to Youth," a
program adopted by Jaycette
chapters all over the United
States.
The project is directed
toward educating male and
female teenagers and
preteens about becoming
parents, with an emphasis on
the risks and responsibilities
of adolescent pregnancy and
its lifetime impacts ?
educationally,
psychologically, physically,
and financially.
Also explored in project
JOY 's educational process is a
look at the possible problems
that may face the next
generation's offspring, in
cluding alcohol, drug abuses,
and poor nutrition.
According to Perquimans
County Jaycette President
Patsy Miller, the local chapter
plans to commit themselves to
Project Joy. and will strive to
reach area youth through the
schools and churches.
Contest runner-up
Lisa Kaye By rum, three
year old daughter of Mr and
Mrs. Bernard Byrum, of
Tyner, was first runner-up in
the 1980 Ava Gardner
Beautiful Baby Photo Contest
recently held in Smithfield,
N.C.
Lisa's picture was entered
into competition by her aunt,
Sandra Kaye Trueblood, of
Hertford.
