THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY otomt37. No. 41 USPS 42*000 Hertford, Perquimans County, N.C., Thursday, DEC. 3, 1901 20 CENTS Sheriff makes B&E arrest the Perquimans County Sheriff ? Department charged three local men November 20 with stealing an automobile from a Winfall car dealership. Sheriff Julian Broughton reported that the three men were arrested by Maryland State Police in Princess Ann. Md. for driving a 1980 Pontiac which the Sheriff's department believes was stolen from Towe Motor Co. in Winfall early the morning of November 20. The three men ? Francis Jones, 1* and WUbert Jones. 14, both of Winfall, and Andre Blanchard, 20, of Hertford ? were transported to Albemarle District Jail, where they are being held under $10,000 bond each. Police charged the men with breaking and entering and larceny, and larceny of a motor vehicle, a felony. According to Broughton, the three men allegedly broke out a glass in the rear of the building and stole the keys to several cars, including the 1980 Pontiac. They then went out and drove off with the car. Maryland State Police picked them up later the same day, taking them into custody when the men didn't produce a registration for the car. "This is a good example of the ef fective police work that can be done when departments work together," Broughton said. "By working together, the subjects were ap prehended and returned to Perquimans County in less than 24 hours." Dear Santa ... Snug Harbor builds a dream The dream of Snug Harbor residents is fast becoming true. "A lot of people didn't think we could do it," said Snug Harbor's Elva Harrington, "but we did it" Snug Harbor is finally able to look forward to its own church. Like most big projects, it took about ten years of thinking and about six months of hard work, but the Snug Harbor Community Church is now reaching the point where the people in the community could soon be conducting services in their own church. The church, built behind the Snug Harbor clubhouse where the congregation has been holding services for about a year, has been completed on the outside. If the church can see clear of its money problems, the inside could be completed as early as next spring. "I'd like to say we'd be finished by Easter, but it may be next Easter," said Harrington, who along with her husband Frank is a member of the church's building committee. "It's not the work that will take so long, it's getting the money." The Snug Harbor Community Church, an interdenominational church which now has about SO members, began in October of last year, hiring ministers Stanley Nixon and Noah Toler to hold services in the clubhouse. They decided soon after to take over where another community church ? the Snug Harbor Com munity Chapel ? left off. The chapel had bought a lot with a septic tank years earlier, but never got any farther. The ground breaking was on July 5 of this year. With a lot of help from volun teers ? particularly Henry Shaw and Lonnie Pritchard ? in the ' community .they laidoat dug the foundation. Local contractors Bill Singleton and Charlie Gregory gave them a good deal on putting in the foundation and building the outside of the church. "The problems seemed so big one minute and then they were gone the next," said Harrington. With the outside nearly com pleted, volunteers will begin work on the inside. The church has one large sanctuary for services, with three classrooms, two of which can be opened up to make the auditorium larger. There will also be a kitchen and rest rooms. The stain glass windows have all been donated in memorial. The teardrop-shaped window behind the alter will show Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. But before the project can be completed, the church has to come up with more money. If worse comes to worse, they can take out a Joasu JULJUfJTil?U?.J5ai4. "Most of the people here are older, and they don't like to be in debt." The community will hold a meeting early this month to decide how they should go about finishing the church. But with the hard work and help of a lot of people, the congregation Above, workers nail down the cedar siding to the Snug Harbor Community Church last week. Below, the as yet uncompleted sanctuary of the church. has come a long way. "I think before, they tried to get a church before they had a congregation," said Harrington. "We had the congregation before we started the church. The Lord just showed us a better way to do it."
