Agriculture * Effects of using herbicides to control Johnsongrass in soybeans Thii is the final article of the aeries 60 Johnsongrass identification and control. This week I will discuss Johnsongrass control in soybeans. ; There are two programs a farmer should consider for Johnsongrass control in soybeans. ^ The first control method involves the use of Roundup to control Johnsongrass rhizomes. Where this U the program the farmer chooses, planting will have to be delayed. During the fall, winter and early spring prior to planting, the soil should not be tilled. When the Johnsongrass in the undisturbed soil begins to seed out, two quarts of Roundup should be applied from a ^ boom at a sufficient height to obtain good coverage of the Johnsongrass tops. This treatment will kill over 90 percent of the rhizome Johnsongrass. Seven to ten days later the soil can be chiseled, disked and bedded. Either Treflan, Prowl, Tolban or Basalin should be used for John songrass seedling control. These dinitroaniline herbicides should be r incorporated soon after application L' using one of the methods of in corporation we discussed last week, i Cultivation should be used to control any Johnsongrass seedlings escaping from the herbicide. Farming The FUtowh north Carolina AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION SERVICE By Bill J?rs??f EllNUM CtlMfHMN The second control program in volves the use of preplant incorporated herbicides to supress rhizome and seedling Johnsongrass. The tillage program should include fall, winter and spring chiseling and disking. This serves to bring rhizomes to the top and cut them into small pieces. The land should be bedded prior to planting and the rows "knocked off." A double rate of Treflan (two to four pints per acre) or Tolban (three to six pints per acre), or a single rate of Treflan + Vernam (one to two pints per acre) and (two and four/tenths to three pints ) should be used. These chemicals should be thoroughly incorporated into the soil immediately after application using one of the methods discussed last week. If you are planting flat, double disking at right angles provides good incorporation results. In areas where a two times rate of Treflan is used, the program should be repeated for two years and a tolerant crop such as soybeans or cotton should be planted. Where Tolban or Treflan + Ver nam is used, rotation to (torn is possible. Be sure to use Sutan + or Eradicane in your corn. The above herbicide at the rates mentioned will often injure soybeans if the soils are cold and wet. To reduce this possibility, plant John songrass infested fields last. Cultivate to destroy developing seedlings and rhizome Johnsongrass. Roundup applied with a wick ap plicator may be used to control escaped Johnsongrass growing above the soybean canopy. In all cases, narrow row soybeans help maximize the competition during the season. Double streaked soybeans on a conventional width row will work very Well. Narrow rows are essential in the first program for maximum results. A rope wick applicator and Roundup are valuable in controlling seedling and rhizome Johnsongrass County Agricultural Ex tension Chairman Bill Jester conducts the farm tour last Thursday of extension crop tests in the county. Here he describes a test at Donald m -.ffp; ? wmmmmmmmmtz' Ray Stalling's farm in Whiteston. which escapes other control methods. It cannot replace a total control program. Control Johnsongrass in adjacent non-cropland areas. These plants can provide seed for infesting tHe crops in the area. My advice is to attack your Johnsongrass problem as if it were a life and death situation. A serious Johnsongrass problem can signal an end to profitable corn and soybeans on a farm. If you take the knowledge in the previous articles and apply it, you can reduce Johnsongrass to an in significant level on your farm. Don't expect the Johnsongrass to completely disappear in one, two or even three years. It will take hard work and persistence to lick this pest, but if you stick with it, things will improve. If you don't, the problem can only get worse. Perquimans Gardening By Jean Winslow t .. The Bird Lady gave me three lotus ? seeds the other day which she had i kept frozen to aid germination. * I was getting ready to go to the beach, and I put those seeds in . something so I could start growing i them while being gone. '61, I'm here j at Nags Head and I can't find them ; for the life of me. [| However, since I've done the I Research for care and feeding , thereof, let me tell you some of the ?things I found out. < Nelumbo, or lotus, is in the waterlily family. It is a water plant, ' 'as you know, with large rhizomes, or underground stems. One, a yellow variety, is native to this country, according to the En cyclopedia of Gardening. The East ^ Indian lotus is a fragrant pink with flattish seed pods that are so popular in flower arrangements. Susan Gilbert, in her article ^Keeping Your Head Above Water," ?-traces the rich history of symbolism surrounding water lilies and lotuses. ? They figure in the Hindu myth of creation: a giant flood swept all life away, leaving only Om, the Supreme , Being, and a sacred lotus that sprang from his navel. When the great flower opened above the expanse of water, in the fiddle reclined Brahma. He recreated the universe from the lotus. In Egypt a water lily often mistaken for a lotus grew wild along the banks of the Nile. It represented fertility and regeneration. East Indian lotus bloom in July and August. What we see here, when we're lucky (we have mostly water lilies), are a beautiful light yellow with flowers and stems rising as much as two feet above the surface of the water. These also bloom in July and August. They are easily naturialized in our zone 8. The water lilies we live with are usually the pond lily, or Nymphaea adorata, which grows wild from Florida to Michigan. Its flowers open in the foremoon for three days. Lotus leaves are round; water lily leaves are generally heart shaped. Water lilies and lotuses are not recommended for small pools. They tend to take over with alacrity. At least four catalogs listed by "Horticulture Magazine," though, feature some dwarf varities that will flourish here if your pool is at least two feet deep. Otherwise, you must treat them as annuals. The nurseries are listed below. ?Lilypons Gardens, Lilypons, Mo. 21717 (catalog $2). . ?Slocum Water Gardens, 1101 Cypress Gardens Road, Winter Haven, Fla. 33830 (catalog $1). ?Wm. Tricker, Inc., 74 Allendale Ave., Saddle River, N.J. 07458 (catalog $1). ?Van Ness Water Gardens, 2460 N. Euclid Ave., Upland, Cal. 91786. Want to try some? All right. Pot up your seed on moist soil in a clay pot and keep watered. Or you could put the seeds inside a ball of clay and set them in your pond. That's what I'd do ? if I could find my seeds. Nurseries will usually send you rhizomes. These should be planted, preferably in the spring, in tubs (not redwood) containing highly fertile seed with some fibre in it. Cover the surface with sand or gravel to prevent the soil from slippinc away. There's very little to do about caring for lotuses. Keep free of debris and remove old flowers and leaves. Supplying the pool with fish aereating plants will provide a balanced ecosystem in that some tropical fish will clear the water of algae, goldfish will eat mosquito larvae and plants will provide oxygen. Let met know how you come out. If you have any extra seeds, I'd like to try it myself. In the meantime, I'll check my jewelry box. Suitcase.
