District conservationists hold annual meeting The Albemarle Conservation District and the Albemarle Resource Conservation Development Com mittee held their annual joint meeting last Tuesday at the Sound view Restaurant. Several local members and guests attended the meeting followed by a tour. One of the first stops on the tour was at the Tidewater Research Station in Plymouth. There the guests saw some new water management techniques. There were drainage systems that also served for irrigation. The water was held back in drainage canals for irrigation and released when drainage was needed. Underground drain tile was used in the fields for both drainage and irrigation. Dr. Wayne Skaggs of NCSU is researching these techniques. He has also found that retaining water in the ditches helps reduce nitrogen content in the water. This will improve the quality of released water. Wayne Nixon, a graduate student at NCSU, showed his plots on no-till soybeans. Nixon is doing research on burning wheat straw versus not burning. He is also looking at nitrogen response to the soybeans. Nixon said that one of the most important ad vantages of leaving wheat itraw on the land ia that of moiature con versation The average temperature under :> oy beans with wheat straw can be 10 (i egrees cooler than without itra w. Leaving the wheat straw also adds oxganic matter back to the soil. Wayne is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tlhomas Nixon of Perquimans County. The tour also stopped at roper School where the group saw !a drainage measure through Resource Conservation and Development (RCltD) Program. !| ?! The drainage around the schoM site was funded about IS perceoit federally and IS percent locally. similiar proposal has been made f<tr Union School in Winfall. This annual tour is designed (ft show local officials and the general public some of the work available % through the Conservation District and the Resource Developmedl Committee. !!
