PCHS graduate wins scholarship I A 1982 Perquimans County High School honor graduate has been named recipient of a scholarship ^ at College of the Albemarle awarded by the Mid-Atlantic Coce -Cola Bottling Company , Inc . Curtis Gregory, general manager, announced this week that Deborah J. Hoffpauir, who ranked first in her class of 125 ( graduates, will receive this year's $300 annual award established by 1 the Elizabeth City bottling company. The gift will be used at COA by , the liberal arts student for tuition , and the purchase of books during the 1982-83 academic year. Miss Hoffpaiur, the daughter of Annie E. Hoffpauir of .Rt. 1, Hertford, distinguished herself ? scholastically while attending t PCHS. She was as member of the French Club for three years, and served as a sophomore marshall for the 1980 graduating class. During her junior and senior years, she was listed in both "Who's Who Among American High School Students" and the "Society of Distinguished American High School Students." Her high scholastic standing earned her membership in the Beta Club for two years. 1 The 1981 Governor's School Nominee was named as a member of the United States Achievement Academy during her senior year. As a junior, Miss Hoffpauir represented PCHS in a math contest at East Carolina University. This year, she par ticipated in similar competition at Elizabeth City State University. Deborah J. [K Boosters members agreed to participate in the Festival of Skills [ October 22 and 23 sponsored by the Home Demonstration Club with a i, | booth of various handmade crafts. f Each person was encouraged to begin plans for the fruit sales cam paign to begin soon. This fruit will be haold and delivered by band members &>efore Christmas. ?^'Appreciation was expressed to ? several individuals and businesses tfpr their donations to the band, f*". This club is open for membership 'ito all persons interested in the Perquimans County High Band. The annual dues are $2 per person per year. John Jenkins explains the technique of marking a masking sheet on a light table prior to positioning negatives as students Barbara Mc Combe, Deborah Harris, Myrtle Perry and Peggy Byrum (both of Hertford) and Ada Dixon look on. Jenkins, plant manager for Davric, Inc., a printing company which will begin operations in Elizabeth City soon, is training 15 area residents for prospective employment. The company's equipment was installed temporarily at the College of the Albemarle for the training sessions spon sored by COA's continuing education division. (COA photo. ) County corn yield 1* contest announced * Bill Jester, Perquimans County Extension Chairman, announced the roles of the 1982 Perquimans County .Corn yield contest recently. ?S. J The purposes of the corn yield contest are: .?to recognize production practices that produce high yields. ?to recognize those producers that are producing the highest yields. . ?to encourage producers to adopt ~ practices resulting in higher yields. ' ?to collect information on the yield potential of the soil types in Perquimans County. '- Jester indicated that anyone producing one acre or more of corn in Perquimans County is eligible to filter. A trophy will be awarded to the top three entries at the annual corn banquet. S* According to Jester the harvested " acreage must be a continuous area with four straight sides and a minimum area of one acre. There Vtnust be a minimum of two rows of similarly-produced corn on each side of the harvested area. At least one member of the Rural Development panel must be present at the harvesting and weighing of the yield. Anyone interested in entering the contest should contact either Bill Jester or Jeff Copeland at the Perquimans County Extension Service (426-5428), Tony Short at the Soil Conservation Service (426-5545) or Tommy Riddick at the ASCS office (426-5802). Last year the county corn contest winner was Donald Ray Stallings with about 180 bushels per acre. Jester indicated that it would facilitate the harvesting and measuring process if the grower would have his plot blocked out. He said that it would be helpful if a farmer could call several days before he expects to get to the field to be entered in the contest for scheduling purposes. Daughter receives MA , Karen G. Nuckolls, daughter of -Mrs. R.C. Glover of Hertford, was * awarded a master's degree from /j Memphis State University during summer commencement ceremonies 'Sunday, August 15. Nuckolls received a master of r I "^education degree with a major in special education from MSU's College of Education. She holds a bachelor's degree from Lambuth College at Jackson, TN. Dr. Thomas Carpenter, MSU president, conferred approximately 900 bachelor, master and doctoral degrees at the ceremonies held at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis. Speaker for the ceremonies was Virginia Pearce Hudgens, MSU in structor of English and a 1982 recipient of MSU's Distinguished Teaching Service Award. She spoke on "The University Education ? the Arch of Experience."
