Ladies exercise class to begin LADIES WINTER VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE: There will be a winter volleyball league (or ladiea. Games will be played on Tuesday nights at Union Gym. A minimum of four teams will be needed for the league. The coat will be $35 per team. Trophies will be awarded to the championship team. Teams may * register for the league by coming by the Recreation Department and paying the fee. Registration will be held through Friday, Jan. 7. LADIES EXERCISE CLASS: Andrea Boone will begin teaching an exercise class for ladies on Monday, Jan. 3. The class will be held at the library each Monday and Wednesday night from 7 to 8 p.m. There is a $5 per month charge for the class. Ladies will need to bring a mat to exercise on. Also, good tennis shoes and comfortable, loose fitting clothing is recommended. MEN'S BASKETBALL: Registration for the men's basketball league will continue through Friday, Jan. 7. The cost is $110 per team. The league will begin on Jan. 17 with games being played on Monday and Thursday nights at Union School Gym. MIDGET BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT: The Edenton Chowan Recreation Department is hosting a holiday basketball tour nament for the midget teams in Edenton and Perquimans. The tournament will begin December 28 with the Edenton Kings pitted against the Perquimans Nuggets at 5:30. The Pefgyimans Royals will play the Edenton Jasz at 1:30. The 7:30 match is between the Peruqimans Bucks and the Edenton Bullets. The final game of the night will have the Perquimans Devils paying the Edenton Nuggets. The tournament semi-finals will be played in Wednesday, Dec. 29, beginning at 6 p.m. with the finals being played on Thursday the 30 at 7 p.m. All games will be played at.the Edenton Armory. General admission will be SO cents. Ages 12 and under, 23 cents. Senior citizens are treated to Christmas sweets and presents during a Christmas party held at the Nutrition Site last week. Cook's corner EDNAWOLVERTON What could be more satisfying after the hustle and bustle of Christmas Day than a hearty bowl of oyster stew served piping hot with lots of homemade bread? Sounds special to me! I feel that oysters deserve real butter and cream, so don't skimp on this recipe! OYSTER STEW 2 c. oyster liquor 2 c. heavy cream 4 T. butter 2 T. flour celery salt pepper parsley flakes 1 qt. oysters Melt butter. Add flour and stir in cream and oyster liquid to make a thick base. Season with pepper (white if you have it), celery salt, and parsley flakes. Add oysters and simmer until done ? about five minutes. Dot with butter ? sprinkle with paprika and enjoy. White to teach notary course Jeanne White, Perquimans County register of deeds, will conduct a one evening course at College of The Albemarle to satisfy recently-added state requirements for new notaries public. The three-hour, one-time seminar, dealing with the responsibilities of the notary public, is mandatory after Jan. 1, prior to the first appointment of persons who wish to become notaries. The training session will be held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 6 in Room A-216 at the North Road Street campus in Elizabeth City.' The course was developed by the Department of Community Colleges in cooperation with the- N.C. Department of State. An $8 registration fee will be charged. Local student receives honors Dr. E.T. Satterfield, Jr., Dean of Student Affairs at Cape Fear Technical Institute, announced this week that Jerry W. White of Winfall, was among 364 students who made the Dean's List for the Fall Quarter, 1982. All students on the Dean's List carried a minimum of twelve quarter hours credit and maintained a 3.0 grade point average. In addition to all other penalties prescribed by law, any person whose duty it is to list any property who willfully fails or refuses to list the same within the time prescribed by law shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500.00) or imprisonment not to exceed six months. The failure to list shall be prima facie evidence that the failure was willful. Any person who removes or conceals property for the purpose of evading taxation or who aides or abets the removal or con cealment of property for the purpose of evading taxation shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed five hundred dolars ($500.00) or imprisonment not to exceed six months. PROPERTY TAX RELIEF FOR ELDERLY AND PERMANENTLY DIS ABLED PERSONS G.S. 105-277.1 excludes from property taxes the first eight thousand five hundred dollars ($8,500) in assessed value of certain property owned by North Carolina residents aged 65 or older or totally and permanently disabled whose disposable income does not exceed nine thousand dollars ($9,000). The exclusion covers real property occupied by the owner as his or her permanent residence and/or household personal property used by the owner in connection with his or her permanent residence.
